Vivid Imagination

The quote reminded me of what happened on the streets of Manhattan in 1980.
I was walking around the blocks of 28th Street and 6th Avenue and kept thinking of how good silk flower business could possibly be. It’s insane to say that the Green, the Dollars, kept adding up in my mind even thought we just received the very first box of the flowers.
It’s 10-lbs air parcel beat-up cardboard box from Thailand. I opened the box and carefully unfold the flowers, one by one. The stems and branches were floral tape hand-wrapped over the galvanized wires. The petals were made of fabric and glued on to the wires. It took a little bit of time to finish each stem but I kind of enjoyed doing it. Perhaps, it was because those Phalaenopsis and Vanda orchids are very well made. They are quite exquisite and stylish.
“What are these flowers? They’re nice. How many do you have?”
Edward, our steady customer who often came to our store and bought our pots for his flower shop in Uptown Manhattan, asked of the flowers.
‘I don’t know, just received them.’
“Can I come back in a few?”
Edward ended up buying all of the flowers from the first shipment. He didn’t even pay attention to the price but said “Let me know when you have the new shipment.”
The air parcel boxes were eventually getting bigger and bigger. A few months later they turned into air cargo. More varieties of flowers were soon followed and sent in bulk in the 40’ containers.
About a decade later, I accidentally found baskets upon losing my way to see World Fair in Knoxville, KY. I was so fascinated with those wild grapevine hand-weaved baskets at the farmer house. They were quite expensive but I bought a few and asked my mom to bring them to Thailand. I was excited and might said quite a different things to my mom. Though, the words I still clearly remember were ‘These baskets could turn our family around and soon you would ride a Mercedes.’
This kind of sense happened again in about 10 years ago. When I was invited to be an advisor at a trade seminar in Ayuthaya, a province 50 miles north of Bangkok. There were over 20 manufactures participating and each one supposed to present their products and we, the trade committee, would criticize, advise where their markets and customers should be. Strangely, there was a factory coming to the seminar with no product, but got the most attention from the committee, including me.
Khun Pinich, the man who was representing the company, apologized for not be able to have his product for the seminar. He however, wanted to share with us of some of his products which had been doing very well. So well that customers had to wait 6-8 months for the orders. He was also nice enough to bring samples of those products. And Coconut Chips was one of them!
It’s looked familiar to Jek Arr when he saw the coconut chips sample bag which I brought home with me. Coincidentally, there were a couple bags of the similar coconut chips in Jek Arr’s house which he bought from Paragon and we started plotting coconut chips business. The timing was good too since Vincent was looking for healthy snack to market in the US. With Pui Fai volunteering in finding the coconut chips factory and soon Koi has come on board to connect all the dots. Thai Fine Foods and Dang have eventually been setting up and running.

จินตนาการที่แจ่มชัด

คําพูดที่ผู้ประพันธ์แฮรี่ พอตเตอร์กล่าวไว้ ทําให้นึกถึงสิ่งที่เกิดขึ้นในแมนฮัตตันในปี ๒๕๒๓ เราเดินไปเรื่อยๆช่วงถนน ๒๘th Street และ ๖th Avenue ในหัวครุ่นคิดแต่เรื่องความเป็นไปได้ของการขายดอกไม้ประดิษฐ์ ทั้งที่เพิ่งได้รับได้เห็นได้หยิบจับเพียงไม่กี่ดอกจากกล่องไปรษณีย์ขนาด ๔ กิโลกรัมที่พึ่งได้รับจากเมืองไทย
เราเปิดกล่องและค่อยๆบรรจงกางดอกไม้ประดิษฐ์เหล่านั้นออกทีละดอก กลีบดอกทําจากผ้าและติดกาวบนลวด ดอกกล้วยไม้ฟาแลนนอปซิส แวนด้าและสาวน้อยเริงระบำทุกดอกมีความประณีตดูสวยมีสไตล์น่าใช้
“ดอกอะไร ดูดีนี่ มีกี่ช่อ”
เอ็ดเวิร์ด ลูกค้าประจําที่แวะเวียนมาหาซื้อกระถางและแจกันให้กับร้านค้าของเขาในเมืองแมนแฮตตันถามถึงดอกไม้ประดิษฐ์ที่เขาไม่เคยเห็นมาก่อน พอรู้ว่าเราเพิ่งแกะกล่อง จึงบอกว่าเขาขอซื้อทั้งหมด โดยไม่ได้ถามไถ่ราคา! ก่อนออกจากร้านยังทิ้งท้ายว่า ไปรษณีย์กล่องต่อไปเขาต้องขอดูเป็นคนแรก
กล่องพัสดุทางอากาศใหญ่ขึ้นเรื่อยๆ ไม่กี่เดือนต่อมาต้องส่งแอร์คาร์โก้ ดอกไม้ประดิษฐ์เพิ่มจำนวนขึ้น จนได้จำนวนมากพอส่งลงตู้คอนเทนเนอร์ เพื่อส่งให้กับลูกค้าตามรัฐต่างๆทั่วอเมริกา
อีกสิบปีต่อมาเราขับรถพาแม่ไปเที่ยวงาน World Fair ที่ Knoxville รัฐเคนตักกี้ พบตะกร้าโดยบังเอิญช่วงหลงทางใน West Virginia เป็นตะกร้าที่ไม่เคยเห็นมาก่อน รูปร่างแปลกแตกต่างกันไปตามความคดโค้งงอของต้นองุ่นป่าที่ขึ้นตามรั้วบ้านแถวนั้น เราเลือกซื้อสามสี่ใบและขอให้แม่หิ้วกลับเมืองไทยและบอกแม่ว่า “แม่อาจจะได้นั่งรถเบ็นซ์ในอีกไม่นานข้างหน้า” ตะกร้า Villa Basket จึงถือกำเนิดในอีกไม่กี่เดือนให้หลังและเป็นที่ยอมรับแพร่หลายในอเมริกา
ความรู้สึกเช่นเดียวกันนี้เกิดขึ้นอีกครั้งเมื่อประมาณ ๑๐ ปีที่แล้วที่ได้รับเชิญเป็นวิทยากรในการสัมนาการค้าเพื่อการส่งออกที่อยุธยา มีผู้ผลิตยี่สิบกว่าบริษัทเข้าร่วมโดยการนำผลิตภัณฑ์ของตนมาขอคำแนะนำเรื่องการตลาดและการขาย มีรายนึงมาสัมนาโดยไม่มีผลิตภัณฑ์ แต่กลับได้รับความสนใจมากที่สุดจากบรรดาวิทยากรรวมถึงเราด้วย
“ขอโทษที่ไม่มีอะไรถาม แต่อยากแชร์สินค้าที่ขายดี ดีมากจนผลิตไม่ทัน ลูกค้าต้องรอ ๖-๘ เดือนหลังสั่งซื้อ” เจ้าของกิจการคนนั้นบอกพร้อมกับแจกตัวอย่างมะพร้าวอบกรอบให้กับทุกคนได้ชิม
กลับถึงบ้านพักที่กรุงเทพ เห็นมีถุงมะพร้าวกรอบวางอยู่ในบ้านน้องชายที่ซื้อจากพารากอน เราจึงปรึกษาน้องชายถึงการทำธุรกิจมะพร้าวอบกรอบ ซึ่งเป็นจังหวะที่วินเซนต์กําลังมองหาสินค้าประเภทของกินเล่นสุขภาพ ปุยฝ้ายอาสาสมัครช่วยหาโรงงานผลิตและก้อยมาสานต่อก่อตั้งบริษัทไทย ไฟน์ ฟู๊ดส์ Thai Fine Foods จัดส่งมะพร้าวอบกรอบให้ ‘Dang’ บริษัทที่วินเซ็นต์ก่อตั้งจัดจำหน่ายในอเมริกา
