Ultimatum
‘How dare you to give an ultimatum to your government?’
The Thailand Ambassador in Stockholm was enraged when I requested them to send me to the US or I would go home. He was cooled down when hearing my reasons and told me to go out and see Scandinavia for a week and he should have the answer from Bangkok head offices when I returned.
The Fin language was the main reason. Their sentence has no space in between the words and that scared me. One year was the time I was supposed to learn the language and then would be eligible to take courses which were taught in Fin. I did not see how this could work for me.
It was a wonderful one week that I saw Sweden, Denmark. It was late September 1977, the country sides, trees were serene and so beautiful. Better yet, when I went back to Stockholm, the Ambassador already had the tickets for me to go to JFK. And this was how I got to the U.S.

“คุณกล้าดียังไงที่ยื่นคําขาดต่อรัฐบาลไทย”
เอกอัครราชทูตไทยที่กรุงสต็อกโฮล์มโกรธมากเมื่อเราขอให้ทุนรัฐบาลส่งไปเรียนที่สหรัฐอเมริกาหรือไม่เราขอสละสิทธิและกลับเมืองไทย อารมณ์ท่านดีขึ้นเมื่อได้ยินเหตุผลและท่านได้บอกให้เราออกไปเที่ยวดูสแกนดิเนเวียในช่วงเวลาหนึ่งสัปดาห์ที่รอคำตอบจากสำนักงานก.พ.ที่กรุงเทพ
ภาษาฟินเป็นเหตุผลหลักที่เราขอไปเรียนในอเมริกา ประโยคของภาษาฟินแลนด์ไม่มีช่องว่างระหว่างคํา กว่าจะรู้คำศัพท์และเรียนการแยกแยะคำเวลาอ่านและเขียน เพื่อนที่เรียนในอเมริกาในอังกฤษคงจบได้ปริญญาโทกันแล้ว
นับเป็นสัปดาห์ที่ดีที่สุด ได้เห็นสวีเดน เดนมาร์กช่วงปลายเดือนกันยายนอากาศกำลังเย็นสบายไม่มีฝน ใบไม้เริ่มเปลี่ยนสีสงบสวยงามมาก พอกลับถึงสต็อกโฮล์มก็ได้รับข่าวดี ท่านฑูตแสดงความยินดีพร้อมให้ตั๋วบินไปเรียนปริญญาโทที่สหรัฐอเมริกา
