Timber Candle
‘This is Khoa Laum, isn’t it?’
The astonished voice was from Mr. Thaksin Shinawatra, the Prime Minister of Thailand, who came to visit our showroom in New York City in December 2001. He seemed to have a long day from addressing the U.N. after the 9/11 disaster. Mr. Prime Minister strolled around our showroom with curious face but said nothing, until seeing the Timber Candles. Holding a 3×9” in his hands, I could see his affectedness face. It seemed for a moment the candle brought him back to his childhood when he perhaps had had Khoa Laum for his daily dessert, just liked everybody else who has grown up in Thailand. In 1996, I wanted to start selling candles, but not just any candles! Then I thought of Khoa Laum. Rather than using sticky rice, I poured the melted paraffin into the actual bamboo stem. The inner stem and its layer created a candle resembled the Thai dessert. We called ‘Bamboo Candles’.
Everyone wanted Bamboo Candles, including the press who thirsted for ‘What’s new’. There are some limitations when dealing with nature, and in this case increasing production was the challenge. We came up with a mold which could still yielded the rough distressed texture, and thence came Timber Candles.
Mr. Shinawatra, I must say, was a typical Thais, who would know the difference of Khoa Laum, Bamboo and Timber Candles. And those things could be related and remembered for their good old days.

เทียนข้าวหลาม
“นี่คือข้าวหลามใช่ไหม?”
เสียงอันตื่นใจจากท่านทักษิณ ชินวัตร นายกรัฐมนตรีแห่งประเทศไทยซึ่งมาเยี่ยมโชว์รูมของเรา ณ นครนิวยอร์ก เมื่อเดือนธันวาคม พ.ศ. ๒๕๔๔
วันนั้นเป็นวันที่ท่านนายกฯมาปราศรัยที่องค์การสหประชาชาติหลังจากภัยพิบัติ ๙/๑๑ ท่านนายกทักษิณเดินรอบๆโชว์รูมของเราด้วยใบหน้าที่นิ่งไม่พูดอะไร จนกระทั่งเห็นเทียนทิมเบอร์ ท่านถือเทียนท่อน ๓x๙” และถามเราพร้อมใบหน้าอิ่มเอิบปล่อยวาง ดูเหมือนว่าเทียนจะพาท่านกลับไปสู่วัยเด็กช่วงที่ท่านมีชีวิตเหมือนชาวบ้านทั่วไปที่โตมากับข้าวหลาม
ในปี ๒๕๓๙ เราต้องการเริ่มขายเทียน แต่ไม่ใช่แค่เทียนอะไรก็ได้ แล้วเราก็นึกถึงข้าวหลาม จึงทดลองเทพาราฟินลงในกระบอกไม้ไผ่ เยื่อสีขาวที่ด้านในของลำไผ่ลอกติดผิวเทียนดูเป็นแถบเป็นชั้น จึงให้ชื่อว่า ‘เทียนไม้ไผ่’
ทุกคนต้องการเทียนไม้ไผ่ ไม่เฉพาะเพื่อเอาไปขาย สื่อมวลชนก็กระหายที่จะทำข่าว “สินค้าใหม่ที่น่าซื้อหา” การผลิตเพิ่มความท้าทายเพราะมีความต้องการสูงในเวลาอันรวดเร็ว จึงดัดแปลงทำแบบขึ้นแทนการใช้ไม้ไผ่จริง เทียนที่ออกมาก็ฝ้าดูเหมือนท่อนไม้จึงให้ชื่อใหม่เป็น
Timber Candles
นายกฯทักษินก็เป็นคนไทยทั่วไปที่รู้ถึงความแตกต่างของข้าวหลาม ไม้ไผ่ ท่อนไม้ ซึ่งเป็นสิ่งเล็กๆน้อยๆแต่เป็นความทรงจำของวันเก่าๆในชีวิตการเติบโตของพวกเขา
