@The Show – แต่งตัวไปขายของ
Scrolling through my own photo album in my cell phone this morning, I was amazed by some well dressed pictures of mine. They were mostly the photos taken from the trade shows and there were in the 80’s.
I dressed quite formal even working daily in the office. Ties and jackets were the must at the shows of those days.
In the 90’s however, I started to dress down which was perhaps in the trend at that time. BIG, the movie was a big hit and all the sudden everyone just wanted to be like Tom Hank, who played the main character of a boy who wishing to be big. Josh, the boy, woke up the next morning to find himself mysteriously in the body of an adult. Even in the body of a grown up man, Josh was always a kid in his behavior, including the way he dressed himself.
A t-shirt hung loose over his pair of jeans, a cozy no nonsense jacket wore just to keep him going and the boy kept running, dancing with his pair of worn-out sneakers. And he was ready to go and be anywhere including a corporation party. The fashion industry seemed to never have enough of Josh’s look. There were new brands riding the waves, including Banana Republic.
For me, there were no need to go out and buy anything. I have always equipped myself with the worn out clothes and sneakers. Well, I have the habit of wearing comfortable things. The fact is, the older they get, is the better in term of wearing. But Chris, my neighbor at High Point Show, who selling chandeliers couldn’t bear seeing me wearing the same old beat up jacket. He said to me “I wish you have a good show so I would see you wearing some other jacket.”
Well, six months later I returned to the show. Chris was happy for not seeing the old jacket. He however, made a small comment “Vance, you look better without!” So, ever since the millennium, Vance went to the shows with mainly t-shirt, jeans and sneakers.

เมื่อเลื่อนดูอัลบั้มรูปภาพของตัวเองในโทรศัพท์มือถือเมื่อเช้านี้ เรารู้สึกทึ่งกับรูปภาพของเราที่แต่งตัวดีทีเดียว ส่วนใหญ่เป็นภาพที่ถ่ายจากงานโชว์ตามเมืองต่างๆ เช่นนิวยอร์ค ไฮพ๊อยท์ ตอนนั้นคนมักจะแต่งตัวเป็นระเบียบ ผูกเนคไทสวมแจ็คเก็ตช่วง ภาพยนตร์เรื่อง BIG ได้รับความนิยมอย่างมากทุกคนก็อยากเป็นเหมือนทอม แฮงค์ ที่เล่นเป็นเด็กชายที่อยากผู้ใหญ่ เด็กชาย Josh ตื่นเช้ามาพบว่าตัวเองอยู่ในร่างของผู้ใหญ่ แต่จอชก็ยังพฤติกรรมเป็นเด็ก รวมถึงวิธีที่เขาแต่งตัวด้วย เสื้อเชิ๊ตใส่หลวมๆ เหนือกางเกงยีนส์ของเขามีแจ็กเก็ตสวมหลวมสบาย อุตสาหกรรมแฟชั่นรูปลักษณ์แบบJosh จึงเป็นที่ต้องการ มีแบรนด์ใหม่ๆเกิดขึ้นเช่น Banana Republic
ส่วนเราไม่จำเป็นต้องออกไปซื้ออะไร เพียงแค่เสื้อตัวเก่าและรองเท้าผ้าใบก็เพียงพอ เพราะเรามีนิสัยชอบสวมใส่เสื้อผ้าฝ้ายสบาย ๆ แต่คริส เจ้าของร้านติดกันที่ High Point Show ผู้ขายโคมไฟระย้าทนไม่ได้ที่เห็นเราสวมแจ็กเก็ตตัวเดิมซ้ำแล้วซ้ำอีก เขาพูดว่า “ฉันขอให้คุณขายดี เพื่อฉันจะได้เห็นคุณสวมแจ็กเก็ตตัวใหม่มั่ง”
หกเดือนต่อมาเรากลับมาเจอกันที่งานโชว์ คริสดีใจที่ไม่เห็นแจ็กเก็ตตัวเก่า อย่างไรก็ตาม เขาอดรนทนไม่ได้และกระซิบบอกเราดังๆว่า “ว่าไปแล้ว ไอก็ยังคิดถึงตัวเก่าอยู่ดี!” ตั้งแต่นั้นมาแวนซ์มักจะใส่เพียงเสื้อยืด กางเกงยีนส์ และรองเท้าผ้าใบ
“ใครจะแต่งตัวยังไงใส่ชุดใหน ก็ช่างเขาสิ”
