The Real Cowboy
Wayne, the chef at Togwotee Mountain Lodge, the motel we stayed near the south entrance of Yellowstone National Park, who would rather be a cowboy, told us about how cowboys lived their life and he summed up with the verse in one of Chris Ledoux’s song ‘The real cowboy is the one you don’t see.’ With mere curiosity, I dig and found below from part of Real Time Buckeroo lyrics:
Well, I ain’t the type of cowboy that you’ll see on TV.
I wasn’t near as pretty as Mama wanted me to be.
Well, I grew up on the ranches just cussin’ all day long.
Breakin’ in them broomtails and hummin’ old dirty songs.
Whiskey tends to make me high and sad songs make me cry.
And pretty women break my heart almost every night.
Well, I run on bean and nicotine I’m a real life buckaroo.
And my heart not pure and my boots ain’t clean.
Upon chatting, Wayne reminded me of once I lost an opportunity to be a cowboy. It was late spring 1979 that I found an article on the New York Times Sunday featuring the wild horses had trouble because of the severe drought in the Midwest and the authorities in Montana, Wyoming were asking for volunteers. It was about the end of the semester. The time was just right for me to do this good deed but I didn’t dare to apply simply because I couldn’t ride a horse.
“Well, you could be a cook, a horse caretaker. To help the horses, no need to ride them.” Wayne was right. If I were living with horses, eventually I would be able to ride them. And I could be proud and be able to tell my grandkids that I was a Chinese cowboy way before Jackie Chan. Any regret? Merely!
Opportunity is like fishing; the more you cast the more you get or miss. The first three years in the US, since I didn’t know that I would have chance to come back, I had dragged myself to do so many different things in that span of time. Perhaps, those years molded me to be ready to live in the States. And If I have to single out the thing that I remember the most, the coast-to-coast trip in summer 1978 was surely the one. By seeing different parts of the country in different layers, I have had a better understanding of Amarican’s way of life. Consequently, it boosted up my confidence. Inevitably, it helped put me on the map.

เวย์นพ่อครัวที่ Togwotee Mountain Lodge โมเต็ลที่เราพักใกล้ทางเข้าด้านทิศใต้ของอุทยานแห่งชาติเยลโลว์สโตน ผู้ซึ่งอยากจะเป็นคาวบอยเล่าให้เราฟังถึงการใช้ชีวิตของคาวบอย และเขาสรุปด้วยข้อความในเนื้อเพลงของ Chris Ledoux ‘คาวบอยตัวจริงคือคนที่คุณไม่เห็น’ ด้วยความอยากรู้อยากเห็น เราค้นหาและพบส่วนหนึ่งของเนื้อเพลง Real Time Buckeroo:
ฉันไม่ใช่คาวบอยประเภทที่คุณจะเห็นในทีวีเลย
ฉันไม่ได้ดั่งใจอย่างที่แม่อยากให้ฉันเป็น
ฉันโตมาอาศัยในฟาร์มปศุสัตว์ทั้งวัน
มีแต่ไม้กวาดสกปรกและเพลงเก่าเป็นเพื่อน

เวย์นทําให้เรานึกถึงครั้งหนึ่งที่เสียโอกาสการเป็นคาวบอย ช่วงปลายฤดูใบไม้ผลิปี ๒๕๒๒ อ่านเจอบทความใน New York Times, Sunday ทราบเรื่องม้าป่ามีปัญหาเนื่องจากภัยแล้งรุนแรงในแถบรัฐมอนตานา ไวโอมิง เจ้าหน้าที่ทางการประกาศขออาสาสมัครช่วยเหลือดูแลม้าป่าเหล่านั้น นับว่าเป็นช่วงเวลาที่เราจะอาสาทำงานนี้ได้ แต่กลับไม่กล้าสมัครเพียงเพราะว่าขี่ม้าไม่เป็น
“แต่คุณทำครัว ดูแลให้อาหารม้าได้นี่ การช่วยม้าไม่จําเป็นต้องขี่มัน” เวย์นพูดถูก ถ้าเราอาศัยอยู่กับม้าไม่นานก็น่าจะขี่มันได้ และยังจะภาคภูมิใจที่สามารถบอกลูกหลานได้ว่า พ่อ ปู่เขาเป็นคาวบอยก่อนเฉินหลง
เสียใจไหม…ไม่นะ
‘โอกาส’ ก็เหมือนการตกปลา ยิ่งโยนเหยื่อมากเท่าไหร่ก็ยิ่งตกได้ปลาหรือพลาดมากขึ้น สามปีแรกในอเมริกาได้ทําสิ่งมากมายหลายอย่างที่ปูทางให้อยู่อาศัยทำมาหากินในประเทศนี้ รวมถึงการขับรถเที่ยวดูอเมริกาไปกลับจากชายฝั่งตะวันออกถึงชายฝั่งตะวันตกในฤดูร้อนปี ๒๕๒๑ โดยเริ่มจากซีราคิวส์ น้ำตกไนแองการ่า โตรอนโต โอไฮโอ อินเดียนา แคนซัส มิสซูรี โอคลาโฮมา นิวเม็กซิโก อริโซนา แคลิฟอร์เนีย เนวาดา ยูทาห์ ไอดาโฮ ไวโอมิง เซาท์ดาโคตา มินนิโซตา วิสคอนซิน มิชิแกน เพนซิลเวเนีย นิวยอร์ค ทำให้มีความเข้าใจที่ดีขึ้นเกี่ยวกับวิถีชีวิตของชาวอเมริกัน สิ่งเหล่านี้ช่วยเพิ่มความมั่นใจมีผลให้ประสบความสําเร็จในหน้าที่การงาน
