The Hamptons
‘We forgot to lock the front door last night.’
“Well, we are still in the beach house, aren’t we?”
Though, there have not been any crime in our Franklin Lakes neighborhood for decades, we just like everybody else who have the customary to lock the doors in our house. In contrast, the home owners in the Hamptons; East Hampton, Amagansett, Sag Harbor and South Hampton leave there houses mostly unlocked, and some of those houses value in 9 figures. Well, they could be a good use sometime; the life guards, with the permissions from the owners could simply walk into their houses and use the toilet.
Yes, there is no toilet or bathroom or fresh water host to be found on the Hampton beaches! Perhaps, it’s the way to tell the non-resident that these are private beaches. Their residents have the right to go to the beaches but need to pay annual beach fees and they can bring their guests to walk, to swim, to watch the seagulls and witness the jumping dolphins occasionally.
The town, Amagansett, has no garbage pick up! There are however, private trash collectors which could be contracted to do the job. Some houses choose to dump their own garbage because they’re hardly at home. I wondered how they could deal with the smell of the trash while driving to the dumpster, especially in the summer. I for one, would not want to deal with garbage disposal. Rather pay a little more property tax and let the town taking care of this unpleasant household leftovers.
Consequently, the property taxes are comparatively lower than other cities in the US. With less crime, no garbage truck expenses, beaches are easy to maintain because they don’t have many people come visit. Plus, most of the side roads and alleys are unpaved dirt surfaces. This is what the house owners has agreed. They want to live their life slow and simple.
Yet, the house aren’t cheap. There is a rather small house on about one-quarter acre of land, on the market and was just sold at $3.4 million. The house itself is kind of a cottage look with no charm to be found. In New Jersey, this whole property could only get about $0.34 million. Yes, here in the Hampton, they pay for the land, and eventually the landscape too. I was stunned when hearing how much the new owner paid for redoing part of his yard. It was $125,000 and I saw only small bushes of shrubs and grass. I soon learned that any plants, trees in the town have to be local species. Any foreign plants are prohibited. Thence, the prices of the able-to-be-grown plants are comparatively high, for example a 2’ bush with small leaves costs $150 each.
It seems outrageous to pay for the landscape but that is only kind of one time deal. The food shopping is somewhat difficult. You may need to drive 15-30 minutes to the nearest supermarket and to find the place doesn’t have all the things you want for your kitchen. Well, the size of any supermarket chain such as Stop&Shop is only about the size of a convenience store in a gas station. The prices of course would be quite high. I found a tomato costed $4 each.
Why do people want to be part of the Hamptons. It’s expensive, that’s why. Chances that you could run into a celebrity is quite possible. And they are mostly the famous ones such as Richard Gere, Alec Baldwin, Steven Spielberg, Robert de Niro, Brook Shields, Jerry Seinfeld, Billy Joel, Beyoncè, Jennifer Lopez, Eli Manning, Calvin Klein, Donna Karen. The other day I just missed seeing former President Clinton who came to walk on the very same beach that I went in Amagansett. A few years ago, Bill who I stayed at his house, went in a club and listened to Paul McCartney who happened to visit his friend and was invited to sing a couple songs for their guests.
It was quite an experience to spend a few days in the Hampton. But I was so glad to come back to my own house. It made me realize that what I already have, may not be the best but it fits me well.

แม้ว่าแทบจะไม่มีอาชญากรรมเกิดขึ้นในเมืองแฟรงคลินเลคส์ รัฐนิวเจอร์ซี เราก็เหมือนกับชาวบ้านทั่วไปที่ยังไงก็ต้องล็อคประตูบ้าน แต่เจ้าของบ้านในย่านแฮมป์ตันส์; East Hampton, Amagansett, Sag Harbor และ South Hampton ส่วนใหญ่ไม่ล็อคปิดประตูบ้าน ทั้งที่บ้านบางหลังมีมูลค่าเป็นเงินเหรียญตัวเลข ๘-๙ หลัก การทำแบบนี้ก็อาจจะเป็นประโยชน์ในบางครั้ง เช่นเจ้าหน้าที่ทำงานตามชายหาดบางคนได้รับอนุญาตจากเจ้าของให้เข้าไปในบ้านใช้ห้องน้ำได้
ไม่มีห้องสุขา ห้องน้ำหรือก๊อกน้ำจืดบนชายหาดแถวแฮมป์ตัน อาจเป็นวิธีบอกว่าเป็นชายหาดส่วนตัวไม่รับคนต่างถิ่น แน่นอนผู้มีบ้านแถวนั้นมีสิทธิที่จะไปชายหาดแต่ต้องจ่ายค่าธรรมเนียมประจำปี ค่าบำรุงชายหาด พวกเขาสามารถพาเพื่อนคนรู้จักไปเดินเล่น ว่ายน้ำ ดูนกนางนวล และบางครั้งอาจจะเห็นปลาโลมาว่ายกระโดดลอยตัวขึ้น
เมืองนี้ไม่มีการเก็บขยะ! อย่างไรก็ตามเขามีบริษัทเก็บขยะที่สามารถว่าจ้างให้ทำงานนี้ได้ บ้านบางหลังเลือกที่จะทิ้งขยะของตัวเองเพราะแทบจะไม่อยู่บ้านกัน เราสงสัยว่าพวกเขาจะจัดการกับกลิ่นขยะขณะขับรถเอาขยะไปทิ้งได้อย่างไรโดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งในฤดูร้อน เราเองไม่ขอเอาขยะใส่รถแน่ๆ จะยอมจ่ายภาษีมากขึ้นหน่อยและปล่อยให้ทางการดูแลเก็บขยะ
ภาษีบ้านเมืองนี้จึงค่อนข้างต่ำกว่าเมืองอื่นๆเมื่อเทียบกันในอเมริกา ด้วยอาชญากรรมที่น้อยแทบไม่มี ค่าใช้จ่ายของรถบรรทุกขยะเรียกว่าเป็นศูนย์ ชายหาดที่ดูแลรักษาง่ายเพราะคนไม่เยอะ ถนนตรอกซอกซอยส่วนใหญ่เป็นพื้นลูกรัง นี่คือสิ่งที่เจ้าของบ้านต้องการใช้ชีวิตอย่างสบายๆและเรียบง่าย
ถึงกระนั้นราคาบ้านก็ไม่ถูก มีบ้านขนาดเล็กหลังหนึ่งบนที่ดินประมาณครึ่งไร่ประกาศขาย ตกลงราคากันได้ที่ ๓.๔ ล้านเหรียญสหรัฐ ตัวบ้านเป็นบ้านทรงกระท่อมที่ไม่มีอะไรเด่น ในรัฐนิวเจอร์ซีย์บ้านนี้คงซื้อขายกันที่ราคาประมาณ ๐.๓๔ ล้านดอลลาร์เท่านั้น ค่าทำสวนก็แพงมาก เราตกตะลึงเมื่อได้ยินว่าเจ้าของใหม่จ่ายเงินให้กับการทำสวนบางส่วนของบ้านเขาถึง ๑๒๕,๐๐๐ ดอลลาร์ และที่เห็นก็มีเพียงไม้พุ่มบนสนามหญ้าเล็กๆ เราได้เรียนรู้เพิ่มเติมว่า พืช ต้นไม้ในเมืองแถบนี้ต้องเป็นพันธุ์ท้องถิ่น ห้ามนำพืชต่างถิ่นเข้ามาปลูก ดังนั้นราคาของพืชพรรณไม้ที่สามารถปลูกได้จึงมีราคาสูงผิดปกติ เช่น พุ่มไม้ขนาด ๒ ฟุต มีราคาตั้ง ๑๕๐ เหรียญต่อต้น ดูเหมือนว่าจะเป็นค่าใช้จ่ายที่สูงเกินความจำเป็น
การหาซื้ออาหารการกินวันละสามมื้อนี่ค่อนข้างยุ่งยาก อาจต้องขับรถ ๑๕-๓๐ นาทีไปยังซูเปอร์มาร์เก็ตที่ใกล้ที่สุด และพบว่าไม่มีทุกสิ่งที่ต้องการ เพราะร้านรวงมีขนาดเนื้อที่เล็ก ราคาก็สูงลิบลิ่ว เราเจอมะเขือเทศราคาลูกละ ๔ ดอลลาร์ ทำไมผู้คนถึงต้องการจะมาเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของแฮมป์ตัน
ที่นั่นมันแพงไงละ! โอกาสที่คุณจะได้พบได้เดินสะดุดกับดาราคนดังนั้นค่อนข้างสูง และพวกเขาส่วนใหญ่เป็นระดับที่คนทั่วไปรู้จักเช่น Richard Gere, Alec Baldwin, Steven Spielberg, Robert de Niro, Brook Shields, Jerry Seinfeld, Billy Joel, Beyoncè, Jennifer Lopez, Eli Manning, Calvin Klein, Donna Karen ก็เมื่อวันก่อนเราเพิ่งคลาดจากการเดินเจอท่านอดีตประธานาธิบดีคลินตันที่มาเดินเล่นที่ชายหาดก่อนเราสองวัน และเมื่อสองสามปีก่อน บิลที่เป็นเจ้าของบ้านที่เราพัก ก็ได้ไปคลับและโชคดีเผอิญได้ฟัง Paul McCartney ที่มาเยี่ยมเพื่อนที่เป็นเจ้าของร้านอาหารและยอมรับเชิญร้องเพลงสองเพลงให้คนแขกเหรื่อคืนนั้นฟัง
นับเป็นประสบการณ์ที่ได้ใช้ชีวิตสองสามวันในแฮมป์ตัน พอกลับถึงบ้านตัวเองเราก็รู้ว่า สิ่งที่เรามีอยู่แล้วอาจจะไม่ดีที่สุดแต่มันก็เหมาะกับเรา
