No Mulligan
“Are you gonna swing or just standing there?” Bill was asked by his peers to go out swing his tee off at Bethpage Goft Court.
‘Didn’t you see the sign -No Mulligan Today?’
Bill humored us over the dining table with his self-deprecating joke. Since his last name is Mulligan, and it happens to be the term most associated with golf, is a ‘do-over’, a second try after the first ball has gone awry. With grin, Bill went on to say that if he could do it again, he would probably want to be a professional caddy!
“How come?” I couldn’t help but asked the man who sent his four kids to colleges and has lived in Hampton, one of the most prestige places in the world, for five decades.
Bill, at his late seventy years old, has a strong frame with well built body. He is still capable of doing and fixing everything from inside out. Fishing has been his hobby and he still owns a boat which periodically needs to be taken care of. Bill does the house works too; cooking, disc washing, laundry. Naturally, Bill is a handy man. Well, who molded this guy?
Bill loftily told us that he worked as a caddy when he was in junior high. He earned pretty good money from the golfers. They were good professions such as lawyers, doctors, captains, investment bankers. He also went out with the fishing boats took care of throwing chum to entice big fishes to come close to the boats. Bill had worked with the fishermen from 13 years old until he went to college. Those jobs required early working hours, often he had to be at the golf courts by 4 in the morning in order to get the queue tickets for early rounds of golfing for his clients. Fishing boats, with no sonar equipment at that time, had to leave early to fish while the sea was still calm in the early morning.
It seemed Bill could do anything if he put his mind to it. He could probably be a caddy for professional golfers and earn millions a year (caddy earns in average 10% of the prize). But I don’t know whether he would be a rounded guy like who he is today. The learning experiences from those jobs, the disciplinary, hard working, responsible had gradually paved grounds for his education, works and family.

บิลคุยรื่นเริงบนโต๊ะอาหารด้วยเรื่องตลกที่เกี่ยวกับชื่อของตัวเอง เนื่องจากนามสกุลของเขา’Mulligan‘ เป็นคำเกี่ยวข้องกับกอล์ฟที่หมายความว่า ‘ตีได้อีกครั้ง’ คือการให้ตีลูกก๊อล์ฟครั้งที่สองถ้าลูกบอลลูกแรกไม่ได้ดั่งใจ และด้วยใบหน้ายิ้มแย้มบิลคุยบอกพวกเราต่อว่า ถ้าย้อนอดีตได้ เขาจะยึดอาชีพเป็นแคดดี้!
“เหรอ ทำไมหละ” เราอดไม่ได้ที่จะถามคนคนนี้ที่ส่งลูกทั้งสี่คนเรียนจบมหาวิทยาลัย และมีบ้านของตัวเองอาศัยอยู่ในเมืองแฮมป์ตันซึ่งเป็นหนึ่งในเมืองที่คนรู้จักทั่วโลกและบิลอยู่เมืองนี้มาเกือบครึ่งศตวรรษ
ด้วยวัยใกล้แปดสิบขวบ บิลยังดูฟิตแอนด์เฟริม เขายังทำโน่นนี่และซ่อมแซมอะไรต่ออะไรทั้งในและนอกบ้าน การตกปลาเป็นสิ่งที่เขาชอบขนาดเป็นเจ้าของเรือที่เขาต้องดูแลซ่อมแซมอย่างสม่ำเสมอ บิลยังชอบทำงานบ้าน ทำอาหาร ล้างจาน ซักผ้า…เอ้ บิล มัลลิแกนถูกหล่อหลอมมาอย่างไร
ด้วยความรู้สึกดีๆบิลย้อนเข้าไปในอดีตเล่าบอกถึงชีวิตช่วงวัยรุ่น ว่าเขาทำงานเป็นแคดดี้เมื่อตอนที่อยู่มัธยมต้น ได้รับค่าตอบแทนค่อนข้างมากจากนักกอล์ฟที่ส่วนมากมีรายได้ดีจากอาชีพนักกฎหมาย แพทย์ นักบิน นายธนาคาร ช่วงนั้นบิลยังหารายได้เพิ่มจากการออกไปกับเรือหาปลาโดยเขาทำหน้าที่ทุกอย่างรวมถึงคอยหว่านเศษปลาเพื่อล่อปลาใหญ่ให้เข้ามาใกล้เรือ เขาทำงานบนเรือตั้งแต่อายุ ๑๓ขวบจนกระทั่งเข้าเรียนมหาวิทยาลัย งานเหล่านั้นต้องเข้าทำงานแต่เช้า บ่อยครั้งที่เขาต้องไปถึงสนามกอล์ฟตอนตีสี่ เพื่อจะรอรับบัตรคิวสำหรับการเล่นกอล์ฟรอบแรกให้กับลูกค้าของเขา เรือประมงสมัยนั้นไม่มีอุปกรณ์โซนาร์ ต้องออกแต่เช้ามืดเพื่อจับปลาในขณะที่ทะเลยังสงบในช่วงเช้า
ดูเหมือนบิลจะทำอะไรก็ได้ถ้าเขาตั้งใจ เขาอาจจะเป็นแคดดี้ให้กับนักกอล์ฟมืออาชีพและมีรายได้ดีปีละเป็นล้านเหรียญ(แคดดี้มีรายได้เฉลี่ย ๑๐%จากรางวัล) แต่เขาอาจจะไม่ใช่บิลที่เรารู้จัก ที่มีความรอบรู้และทักษะรอบด้านจากประสบการณ์การทำงานเหล่านั้น ซึ่งต้องมีวินัย ทำงานหนัก มีความรับผิดชอบ สิ่งเหล่านั้นคงช่วยปูพื้นฐานให้กับชีวิตของบิลทางด้านการศึกษา การงาน และสร้างครอบครัว
