Mobile Library

‘Rather than building temples, palaces, maybe the money would be better used with building libraries.’     I couldn’t agree more with a friend who raised up an excitant topic during our conversation and it reminded me of what I have been wanting to do – bring books to the less fortunate kids in Thailand. It has been more than ten years since I first thought about this and it is still quite clear in my head. In the U.S., soliciting from friends, neighbors, libraries could be a challenge but with the coalitions of volunteer and non-profit organization perhaps shipping cost could be reduced.

Distributing those books though, has not yet been cleared. There are thousands of small towns and villages scattering around Thailand. Even if we target only a few provinces, it is still a lot of areas to be covered. I thought of loading the mobile trucks (in the shape of a bus with shelves filled with books) and drive to those villages. Kids can come up to the truck and borrow the books then return them on the next visit.be that as it may, this morning Vincent launched an idea of mailing the books as printed matter. He went on to say that it could possibly be more cost effective if there is a person in the town would help distribute those books. This led me to think of the villages’ leaders (กำนัน อ.บ.ต.) or monks. I suddenly could see the project more clearly. This could pave the way for expansive distribution. Let’s shift the mobile truck to Plan B and start approaching the big companies such as; DTAC, AIS, CP, Pepsi for them to be part of the project. Well, the idea is so plain and simple, isn’t it? Anyone could think of, to be blunt, someone could and should have done this long time ago. Is it too late?  No, there is no such thing as too late in education. Take me for an example. I started reading just about ten years ago. My son, Vincent gave me a book when I turned 60. It was The Moth. The Little History of the World was the second book handed to me and thereupon books become part of my bed time routine.

ห้องสมุดเคลื่อนที่

‘แทนที่จะสร้างวัด สร้างวัง เงินอาจจะใช้สร้างห้องสมุดบ้างดีไหม’ ฉันเห็นด้วยกับเพื่อนที่หยิบยกหัวข้อนี้ขึ้นมาคุย ทําให้นึกถึงสิ่งที่อยากจะทำคือการนําหนังสือไปให้เด็กด้อยโอกาสในเมืองไทย กว่าสิบปีแล้วที่คิดเรื่องนี้แต่มาถึงวันนี้ทุกอย่างยังชัดเจน ในตอนนั้นคิดจะรวบรวมหนังสือในอเมริกา โดยรวบรวมจากการบริจาคจากเพื่อน ลูกค้า ห้องสมุด การแจกจ่ายหนังสือเหล่านั้นยังไม่ได้คิดให้กระจ่าง  มีหมู่บ้านเล็กๆหลายพันแห่งกระจายอยู่ทั่วไทย ถึงแม้ว่าเราจะกําหนดเป้าหมายเพียงไม่กี่จังหวัด แต่ก็ยังมีพื้นที่อีกมากที่ต้องครอบคลุม เคยคิดว่าจะดัดแปลงรถบัสเป็นห้องสมุดเคลื่อนที่ เพื่อขับเคลื่อนไปตามหมู่บ้านต่างๆ เด็กๆจะได้ขึ้นมาที่รถ ดูและยืมหนังสือแล้วส่งคืนในครั้งต่อไปที่มาแวะหมู่บ้านเดิม อย่างไรก็ตาม เช้านี้ Vincent ช่วยให้แนวคิดเพิ่มเติมในการจัดส่งหนังสือคือส่งทางไปรษณีย์ไปให้ตามหมู่บ้าน โดยมีหัวหน้าหมู่บ้าน (กํานัน อ.บ.ต.)หรือพระภิกษุเป็นผู้ดูแลอำนวยการจัดสรรหนังสือให้กับโรงเรียนในท้องที่ ก็เป็นไปได้ทีเดียว คงถึงเวลาแล้วที่จะทาบทามบริษัทใหญ่ๆ เช่น DTAC, AIS, CP, มาม่า, Pepsi มาช่วยสนับสนุนโครงการ  ความคิดนี้ไม่ได้มีอะไรพิเศษ  แล้วทำไมไม่มีใครทำ  ไม่สิ ไม่มีความคิดที่สายเกินไปในด้านการศึกษา ขอยกตัวเองเป็นตัวอย่าง ฉันเริ่มอ่านหนังสือเมื่อประมาณสิบปีก่อน  Vincent ให้หนังสือเล่มนึงเมื่อฉันอายุ ๖๐ ขวบ ‘ผีเสื้อกลางคืน’ และอ่าน        ‘The Little History of the World’ เป็นเล่มที่สอง ทุกวันนี้หนังสือได้กลายเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของกิจวัตรก่อนนอน
