New York, New York

Dear Mom,
I have seen lots of different things in just a couple days. I started to agree with those New Yorkers who proclaim their city, New York, New York as the Capital of the Universe. There are still a long list of places and things that I would want to see, to do. None the less, I want to tell you more about McDonald’s that I experienced yesterday.
Friends told me that visiting America won’t be complete without tasting McDonald’s hamburger and French fries. It took no effort at all because this fast food chain has their restaurants on pretty much every corner in any town. The one in Times Square was quite inviting with its avant-garde interior; color, spacing, cleanliness. There was not a lot on the menu to choose from but that is what fast food is all about. People come in, order, eat and leave the store rather quickly. Prices are considered reasonable but not to me. Well, I still compare everything to Thai Bath and if anything costs more than 20 Bahts, it would not drain my pocket easily. So far, the money are still intact since there are not many things that cost less than one dollar. But I won’t think twice to pay for their French fries. It was incredibly tasty.
I couldn’t help but compare the food with the street vendors in Thailand. They are of course, different, or very different I should say, however the conveniency though is about the same. Rather than putting food on a plate like Thai food in general, the hamburgers, fries are wrapped or put in paper sleeve containers. Utensils are well supplied but people seem to just eat with their hands. Often, I see people eating hamburgers while walking. Well, I was one of them eventually. Yesterday we took our bags and went out looking up at the Broadway flashing humongous boards and stood eating our hamburgers and fries. The conveniency is contagious, isn’t it. Some days, this fast food chain might be found everywhere in the world, including Thailand!
I, for sure, will stick with Thai food regardless. The other day, Uncle Boonchu picked me up at JFK Airport and drove us to China Town. The common language in this part of the city is Chinese! The food, the stores, the street vendors and the people here are somewhat like Bangkok’s China Town. I saw a sign “Fresh Bean Sprouts $0.50/Lb’” written in Thai, first I was shocked then I felt like I was at home, our home where I always have extra bean sprouts to put on my favorite green curry chicken homemade soup.

แม่ครับ
จากที่ได้เห็นสิ่งต่างๆมากมายในเวลาเพียงไม่กี่วัน ลูกเริ่มเห็นด้วยกับชาวนิวยอร์คที่ประกาศว่าเมืองของพวกเขาเป็นเมืองหลวงของจักรวาล นี่ยังมีสถานที่ที่อยากจะไปและสิ่งที่อยากจะทำอีกมาก แต่วันนี้อยากจะขอคุยต่อจากเมื่อวานเรื่อง McDonald’s
คนพูดกันว่า ‘ไปเยือนอเมริกาจะไม่สมบูรณ์หากไม่ได้ชิมแฮมเบอร์เกอร์และเฟรนช์ฟรายส์ร้านแมคโดนัลด์’ ปรากฎว่าหาไม่ยากเลย เพราะเครือข่ายร้านอาหารด่วนสะดวกสั่งยี่ห้อนี้มีอยู่แทบทุกหนทุกแห่ง ร้านที่ไทม์สแควร์ดึงดูดใจคนด้วยการตกแต่งภายในที่ทันสมัยแต่เรียบง่ายและเป็นกันเอง เน้นความสะอาด เขามีเมนูให้เลือกไม่มากนักซึ่งก็เป็นหลักการสำคัญสำหรับธุรกิจที่เน้นความสะดวกบริการที่ไหลลื่นรวดเร็ว ผู้คนเข้ามาจะได้รับอาหารหลังจากที่สั่งในเวลาเพียงไม่กี่นาที สนนราคาถือว่าสมเหตุสมผล แต่ก็ยังแพงไปสำหรับลูกที่ยังคงเปรียบเทียบทุกอย่างกับค่าของเงินไทย อะไรที่มากกว่า ๒๐ บาท จะไม่ได้เงินจากลูกง่ายๆ แต่จะไม่คิดมาก หากจะได้กิน เฟรนช์ฟรายของแมคโดนัลด์ เขาทำอร่อยมาก อร่อยแบบไม่เคยกินที่ไหนมาก่อน
ลูกอดไม่ได้ที่จะเปรียบเทียบกิจการร้านนี้กับพ่อค้าแม่ขายข้างถนนในเมืองไทย แน่นอนว่าต่างกัน ไม่ใช่สิ ต่างกันมาก ถึงแม้ความสะดวกจะใกล้เคียงกัน แต่ที่อเมริกาแทนที่จะตักวางอาหารลงบนจานอย่างอาหารไทยทั่วไป แฮมเบอร์เกอร์ เฟร้นฟรายส์จะถูกห่อหรือใส่ในภาชนะกระดาษ คนก็เพียงเปิดห่อเปิดถุงหยิบกินได้เลย บ่อยครั้งที่เห็นคนกินแฮมเบอร์เกอร์ไปเดินไปและลูกก็รวมอยู่ในกลุ่มนั้นด้วย ก็เมื่อวานลูกหิ้วถุงออกไปยืนดูบิลบอร์ดขนาดใหญ่ที่ฉายแสงแข่งกันเสนอขายสินค้าและกินแฮมเบอร์เกอร์และมันฝรั่งทอดไปด้วย ใครๆไม่ว่าจะชนชาติไหนก็ชอบความสะดวก คงไม่แปลกที่ฟาสต์ฟู้ดนี้อาจจะผลุดขึ้นได้ทุกแห่งในโลก รวมทั้งเมืองไทยด้วย
แต่ยังไงลูกคงจะยึดติดกับอาหารไทยไม่เปลี่ยนแปลง เมื่อวันก่อนลุงบุญชูมารับที่สนามบิน JFK แล้วขับรถพาลูกไปที่ไชน่าทาวน์ อาหาร ร้านรวง คนขายของข้างทางและผู้คนที่นี่คล้ายๆกับเยาวราชบ้านเรา เห็นป้ายภาษาไทย “ถั่วงอก $0.50/Lb.” ตอนแรกตกใจทีเดียว แล้วก็รู้สึกใจชื้นขึ้นมาที่เราเหมือนอยู่ไม่ไกลบ้าน บ้านเราที่มักจะมีจานถั่วงอกเคียงคู่กับแกงเขียวหวานไก่ เมนูโปรดที่แม่ทำให้พวกเรากินกันเป็นประจำ
