“Go Outside for Everything“
It was the line which Bob Hope amused the audience at the 25th Oscar Academy Awards. The event was in 1953, the very first time the awards was televised. Bob went on and on entertaining and revealed that ‘Television is wonderful. Today you can sit at home see Broadway shows, go to church in your living room. You don’t have to go outside anymore. I was born in a farm, I had to go outside for everything. The audience knew exactly what he meant and that brought a burst of applause. For me, Bob just cracked open the memory of my childhood. It was, in the contrary, not quite funny if anyone had actually been there.
Back then, we lived and worked in a small 2-story decrepit townhouse. Downstairs was mainly for store front and merchandise. There was a modest chamber in the back that we used for just about anything from dining, chatting, studying even relaxing and napping. Upstairs there were two rooms for sleeping, mainly. Air conditioning was considered a luxury appliance at that time, and it was definitely out of reach. The weather was unbearable in the hot and humid summer for nine of us to be teemed into the two puny rooms. Occasionally, I volunteered to go outside and sleep on the porch. I liked it though, the mosquito net shielded bugs but let the wind breeze through. It was my sanctuary, I could say, until it rained. Often, I didn’t realize until I was soaked and wet. I had no choice but moved myself into the room at the middle of the night. It was already cramped but there was always room for me to squeeze myself in.
At that time, it was fortunate that I didn’t have to go to toilet during the night. Well, I don’t think I could make it anyway, if I would have to run down stairs, open the cranky door out to the backyard to find the bathroom.
The sole bathroom was quite plain with only one big urn of water, equipped with an aluminum bowl for dredging water to pour on when bathing. Taking a shower was unknown and water heating did not exist at that time. It was normal to take the bath several times a day in the summer months, some did almost every hour. In winter however, the weather could plunge down to 50 degrees Fahrenheit which was considered dreadfully cold in Thailand. The water in the urn seemed much colder. I put the blame on the aged earthenware in front of me and rapidly poured the freezing cold water on my body to be done with it in seconds. Soap was no longer a necessity.
My mom cooked outside as well. It took literally 10-15 minutes just to get the charcoal lit properly in a bulky clay stove. The smoke from the brazier would fill and ruin the room if it was to cook inside. There were no easy conveniences. But Mr Hope would probably agree with me that, those were warm memories. This reminded me of what Sigmund Freud said;
“One day, in retrospect, the years of struggle will strike you as the most beautiful.”

“ทุกอย่างต้องออกไปทำนอกบ้าน”
เป็นคำที่ Bob Hope สร้างความสนุกสนานเฮฮาให้กับผู้ชมในงานประกาศรางวัลตุ๊กตาทองครั้งที่ ๒๕ ในปี ๒๔๙๖ ซึ่งเป็นครั้งแรกที่มีการถ่ายทอดทีวี บ๊อบพูดคุยอย่างสนุกสนานและกล่าวว่า “โทรทัศน์ช่างเป็นสิ่งวิเศษ วันนี้คุณสามารถนั่งที่บ้านดูการแสดงบรอดเวย์ หรือไปโบสถ์ในห้องนั่งเล่นของคุณ คุณไม่ต้องออกไปข้างนอกอีกต่อไป ตัวเขาเองเกิดในฟาร์ม แต่ต้องออกไปข้างนอกเพื่อทำทุกอย่าง” ผู้ชมรู้ดีว่าเขาหมายถึงอะไรจึงมีเสียงปรบมืออย่างกึกก้อง สำหรับตัวผมเอง Bob Hope ได้คุ้ยความทรงจำในวัยเด็กของผม แต่มันไม่ตลกเลยถ้าใครได้ไปใช้ชีวิตแบบนั้น
เมื่อก่อนเราทั้งอยู่อาศัยและทำงานในตึกแถว2 ชั้นคูหาเดียว ชั้นล่างส่วนใหญ่เป็นหน้าร้านจัดวางและขายสินค้า มีห้องเล็กอยู่ด้านหลังที่เราใช้ทำอะไรหลายอย่างตั้งแต่รับประทานอาหาร พูดคุย อ่านหนังสือ แม้กระทั่งพักงีบ ชั้นบนมีสองห้องสำหรับนอนเป็นหลัก เครื่องปรับอากาศถือเป็นอุปกรณ์ที่หรูหราในสมัยนั้นและเป็นสิ่งที่เกินเอื้อมสำหรับครอบครัวเรา อากาศในฤดูร้อนบางวันอบอ้าวเกินกว่าที่พวกเราเก้าคนจะทนอัดแน่นในสองห้องนอน บางครั้งเราอาสาออกไปนอนข้างนอกที่ระเบียง กางมุ้งกันยุงเย็นสบายจากลมที่พัดผ่าน บางคืนฝนตกและบ่อยครั้งเราไม่รู้สึกตัวจนกระทั่งตัวเปียกปอน จึงไม่มีทางเลือกอื่นนอกจากย้ายตัวเองเข้าไปในห้องตอนกลางดึก ถึงแม้ห้องจะคับแคบแต่ก็มีที่ว่างให้เราเบียดตัวเข้าไปได้เสมอ
นับว่าโชคดีที่ตอนนั้นไม่ต้องเข้าห้องน้ำตอนดึก ซึ่งก็คงทำไม่ได้อยู่ดีเพราะต้องลงบันไดคลำหาประตูที่เปิดออกไปเพื่อเข้าห้องน้ำหลังบ้าน
ทั้งบ้านมีห้องน้ำเพียงห้องเดียว มีตุ่มใส่น้ำตรงมุมห้องและขันอลูมิเนียมสำหรับตักน้ำ ตอนนั้นยังไม่มีฝักบัวและไม่มีเครื่องทำน้ำอุ่น การอาบน้ำวันละหลายครั้งในช่วงฤดูร้อนนับเป็นเรื่องปกติ บางคนอาบเกือบทุกชั่วโมง อย่างไรก็ตามในฤดูหนาว อากาศอาจลดต่ำลงถึง ๑๐ องศาซึ่งถือว่าหนาวจัดในเมืองไทย น้ำในตุ่มยิ่งเย็นกว่า เราหลีกเลี่ยงไม่แตะตุ่มดินที่เย็นเฉียบ ได้แต่รีบจ้วงตักน้ำเย็นเยือกรดตัวอย่างรวดเร็วเพื่อให้แล้วเสร็จภายในไม่กี่อึดใจ สบู่จึงเป็นสิ่งไม่จำเป็น
อาหารก็ต้องทำนอกบ้านด้วยเช่นกัน การจุดไฟให้ถ่านไม้ติดในเตาอั้งโล่ต้องใช้เวลา 10-15 นาที ควันจากเตาก่อตัวปกคลุมเต็มห้อง นับว่าไม่มีสิ่งอำนวยความสะดวกใดๆในสมัยโน้น บ๊อบ โฮปคงจะเห็นด้วยกับเราว่า สิ่งเหล่านั้นเป็นความทรงจำที่อบอุ่นตราตรึง ทำให้นึกถึงที่ซิกมุนด์ ฟรอยด์กล่าวไว้
“วันหนึ่งเมื่อมองย้อนกลับไป ช่วงของความยากลำบากเป็นสิ่งที่มีคุณค่าประจำใจเรา”
