When the past lets you in, what would you do?
I don’t know about you, but I have already gone in to the past so many times…through my memories. There are a good number of places in the past that come up to me and some of them are still fresh in my mind such as Fleischmanns.
The New York Times’ Classified Advertising column led me to this small town in Upstate New York. I looked for a job while I was waiting for my thesis to be approved, and I saw Ad posted by a saw mill. They were in search for a person to regulate the dry kiln and perform quality control. I got the job at my first interview after the owner saw my transcript.
‘Where is the factory?’ Rather than telling me the name of the town, the owner showed me the map. Of course, I had to write down the name just to make sure I could later find the town on the map. Before asking him more questions, the owner threw in a place for me to stay as an incentive to accept his offer, and he wanted me to start immediately. I took the offer and went to work in Fleischmanns right after my graduation in June 1980.
Working in the factory was the easy part – blending in with the workers and other colleagues was another story. Though, I must give some credit to my 1965 Plymouth station wagon. It helped start conversations. Someone even offered $500 for the car when he knew that I bought it from a professor for only $350. The town was very small with only a few hundred people and it is as remote as the Catskill Mountains. At the time, there were no car dealers, appliance stores, supermarkets and boutique shops, not to mention shopping centers. Where did the locals buy their clothes, pots and pans. refrigerators?
The internet was not yet known, not even Google, much less Amazon. Computers, if A company could afford the, would needed a room by itself. Mail order was the only way people in the remote areas such as Fleischmanns could buy items. The Sears Catalog was comparable to Amazon at that time and It’ seemed like the catalog was part of their livelihood. There was pretty much everything available to buy for a household including outdoor and indoors Items, kitchen, bed and bath – all in Sears catalog. Lunchtime was the shopping time. Women got together and opened the catalog as big as the Yellow Pages. Some mailed the orders with their checks to the Sears headquarters in Chicago and waited for the delivery, which usually took a couple weeks. It was indeed the first time I witnessed and experienced the mail order business. Though, I knew the business, I always bought things from the physical shops, department stores, including Sears stores.
Of my very first paycheck, I was shocked that it was only $360. Even though I knew the income tax would be deducted from the payroll, $120 was, in my opinion, too much of the deduction. It represented 25% tax from my $25,000 annual salary. With disappointment, I spoke some obscene language. It was heard by one of my colleagues. And he said to me “Then don’t work. Or Uncle Sam will tax everyone, regardless.”
I let the selfish desire habit of not wanting or avoiding to pay taxes get the best of me. I learned, I thanked the man and I have never again mentioned about high or unfair taxation. Besides, lots of people earned much less than me. $2.90 was the minimum wage at that time. Most workers made less than $150/week and what they brought home might last for only a few days.
With my first check, I went out to buy a turn table. It was my first sophisticated music equipment. It was money well spent because the long play records of Elvis, the Beatles, the BeeGee, Perry Como held me well when I was alone. Together with watching Yankees games, I was entirely occupied and happy to be in my chamber…until October!
It was the middle of autumn when the fall foliage was in their peak. And right behind my lodge was a range of mountains covered of maple trees. The leaves changing from green to yellow to orange red was so bright and intense and beautiful. It was like they were trying to fill me up with color, to saturate me. Yet, there was a harmony everywhere and a luster in the sky. There was literally nothing in my mind. I didn’t have any concerns, including time, when I was watching the beauty of nature.
The weather was getting colder and there were no leaves left on the trees by late November. Then, the time came. The factory had to temporarily close due to a lack of orders. However, the key staff, including me, were offered to take payrolls and be ready when the phone rang. I thanked the owner for his kind gesture but declined to receive the salary because I thought there was a possibility that I might end up working or being somewhere else.
“if I were you, I would take the money and turn this junk (my Plymouth wagon) into a new Mustang.” And the guy was right, $4,000 was the price for new 1980 Ford Mustang. For me, I was fine with that good old wagon, and it’s ok that the phone was never rung.

อากาศเริ่มหนาวขึ้นในปลายเดือนพฤศจิกายน ใบไม้ร่วงหล่นแทบไม่มีเหลือบนต้นไม้ ประจวบกับเป็นเวลาที่ทุกคนต้องหยุดทำงานเพราะโรงงานต้องปิดตัวชั่วคราวเนื่องจากไม่มีใบสั่งซื้อ พนักงานหลักๆรวมทั้งเรามีข้อเสนอที่โรงงานจะยังจ่ายเงินเดือนแต่ต้องกลับมาทำงานทันทีที่ โรงงานเปิดทำการ เราขอบคุณเจ้าของโรงงานแต่ปฏิเสธที่จะรับเงินเดือนเพราะคิดว่ามีความเป็นไปได้ที่อาจจะไปทำงานที่อื่นหรือกลับเมืองไทย
“ถ้าฉันเป็นคุณ ฉันจะรับเงิน จะได้ขายรถสัปรังเคแล้วซื้อมัสแตงคันใหม่” เพื่อนงานคนนั้นเกิดเสียดายแทนเรา เขาพูดถูกทีเดียว เงินที่เราปฏิเสธไม่รับคงซื้อรถใหม่ได้ (๔,๐๐๐ ดอลลาร์เป็นราคาฟอร์ดมัสแตงปี ๑๙๘๐) แต่เราก็โอเคนะกับรถเก๋ากึ๊กคันนั้น
