ECO101
“Go out and spend money, don’t just put them in the banks.”
I was so confused to hear what the professor said in the very first session of his ECO101- Introduction to Economics class. It was totally different from what my mom had been telling me all along. But I didn’t try to get to the bottom of this dilemma since I never had enough money to worry about what I would want to do with it.
After started earning money and having some saving, the words has literally sinked in. I started to spend but still cautiously, basically for the long term such as investing in business, buying properties, houses, condos. For food and traveling, I could say that I am not a spender…not until a couple days ago.
I flew to Bangkok on Sunday. The flight from JFK to Norita had passengers only about one third of its B777 aircraft. The airlines crews, Japan Airlines, both ground and flight attendants mindfully worked at their utmost capacity. The airlines themselves must lose money significantly during the Covid down time, but they keep flying even though there are a sporadic amount of passengers. There were only a few stores opened in the airports but things went smoothly because there were sufficient amount of staff and personnels to assist passengers and facilitate them from gates to gates. At my destination, Suwannaphum Bangkok Airport, things were well prepared upon walking out of the gate. There were rows of chairs for passengers to sit while waiting for document inspection. Some of the staff were the officers from Health Department actively facilitating the procedure.
It didn’t take me long to locate my driver even though there must be about 40-50 different drivers who were waiting for their passengers. Well, they simply helped each other. I however felt strange when I got to the hotel. There are three different desks I had to go to, started from checking in, health and Covid registration and then Covid RT-PCR test. But I understood why they needed to do those tasks.
There much be closed to one hundred people that involved in this trip starting from the Uber driver to the hotel in Bangkok. Some of them worked because they were their daily full time jobs and most of them had the jobs because people traveled. It was perhaps the first time that I feel so good of my traveling. It’s not just because I got the most for my money, but I realized how much tourist industry would influence economy. The industry indeed, creates jobs substantially.
Let’s go out and spend! And you will be more happy than parking your money in the banks.

เศรษฐศาสตร์เบื้องต้น-ออกไปจับจ่ายใช้เงิน
เราสับสนทีเดียวที่ได้ยินศาสตราจารย์อุทิศ นาคสวัสดิ์พูดในชั่วโมงแรกของชั้นเรียน Introduction to Economics ช่างตรงกันข้ามกับที่แม่บอกเรามาตลอด แต่ฉันก็ไม่ได้มีปัญหาอะไรเนื่องจากเราไม่เคยมีเงินเพียงพอที่จะกังวลว่าจะทําอะไรกับมัน
หลังจากเริ่มทำงานและมีเงินออมก็มีค่าใช้จ่ายเป็นเงาตามตัว แต่ยังคงระมัดระวังโดยลงทุนทางพื้นฐานและในระยะยาว เช่น การลงทุนในธุรกิจ การซื้ออสังหาริมทรัพย์ ส่วนค่าใช้จ่ายเรื่องอาหารและการเดินทางก็ยังใช้เงินอย่างกระเหม็ดกระแหม่…จนกระทั่งเมื่อสองสามวันก่อน
เราบินไปกรุงเทพด้วยเที่ยวบินจาก JFK ไปยัง Norita มีผู้โดยสารเพียงหนึ่งในสามของเครื่องบิน B๗๗๗ ลูกเรือของสายการบิน Japan Airlines ทั้งภาคพื้นดินและในเที่ยวบินทํางานอย่างขมักเขม้นอย่างเต็มความสามารถ สายการบินเองต้องสูญเสียเงินอย่างมากในช่วงเวลาโควิด แต่ก็ไม่ยอมหยุดบริการบินแม้ว่าจะมีผู้โดยสารไม่กี่คน
ที่สนามบินสุวรรณภูมิ ทุกอย่างถูกเตรียมพร้อม มีเก้าอี้เป็นแถวให้ผู้โดยสารนั่งรอการตรวจเอกสาร เจ้าหน้าที่บางคนมาจากกรมอนามัยอํานวยความสะดวก
เราเจอคนขับในเวลาไม่นานทั้งนี้เพราะทุกคนต่างอำนวยความสะดวกช่วยเหลือซึ่งกันและกัน พอไปถึงโรงแรม มีโต๊ะสามตัวที่ฉันต้องเช็คอิน สุขภาพและการลงทะเบียนโควิด และจากนั้นก็ตรวจโควิด RT-PCR เราให้ความร่วมมืออย่างเต็มที่เช่นกัน
คงมีผู้คนเป็นร้อยที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการเดินทางครั้งนี้นับตั้งแต่คนขับอูเบอร์จากบ้านนิวเจอร์ซีย์ไปจน ถึงโรงแรมในกรุงเทพฯ นี่อาจเป็นครั้งแรกที่เรารู้สึกดีมากกับการเดินทาง ด้วยตระหนักว่าอุตสาหกรรมการท่องเที่ยวมีอิทธิพลต่อเศรษฐกิจมากเพียงใด อุตสาหกรรมนี้สร้างงานอย่างมากมาย
ออกไปใช้จ่ายกันเถอะ! และคุณจะมีความสุขมากกว่าการเอาเงินไปฝากให้ธนาคารใช้
