Don’t Just Learn from Classrooms – ออกไปท่องโลก
The other days, I saw a familiar face on Facebook. The guy was one of the speakers at a prominent seminar about the investment in Thailand. As looking closely, he is my cousin, Guide is his name.
About a decade ago, Guide won the scholarship from a big company in Thailand and he was accepted by Columbia University for his master degree in engineering.
He asked for my advise when we met in Bangkok. Over the table, we ate, talked just about everything but study. However, at the end I said to him ‘don’t be just studying, go out to meet people, talk to them…and see the world.’
Someone at the table was frustrated and disappointed of my advice. Well, I went on to say that he had been a straight A student all along. Naturally, he would ride along in any classes. Those knowledge however, may not be enough or effective when work.
I gave him an example of my meeting with Pottery Barn, our biggest and most important customer. Normally, there were designer, buyer, sourcing manager and their assistants. Sometimes, the GMM, General Merchandise Manager, or even their president, would join the meetings. Though, we had everything ready; the candles were unwrapped and set at the middle of the table and most of the staff already in the room, yet we couldn’t talk any business transaction until the present of GMM. Those 5-10 minutes wait would be gone by with ease if we could chat just about anything; weather, sport, economy or even jokes. But if there was no conversation, a few minutes would make the room discontented.
About a year later, we incidentally ran to each other. We enjoyed our noodles and catching up with each other. Guide told me he liked Chicago, just came back from Hawaii and Europe was his next destination for the coming spring break. We chatted an hour in the restaurant near his campus, I was a listener!

ออกไปท่องโลก
วันก่อนเราเห็นคนที่คุ้นเคยบน Facebook เขาเป็นหนึ่งในวิทยากรการสัมมนาเกี่ยวกับการลงทุนในประเทศไทย เมื่อได้เห็นอย่างชัดๆ คนนั้นคือ ไกด์ ลูกชายอาปอลูกพี่ลูกน้องของเราเอง
ประมาณสิบปีที่แล้ว ไกด์ได้รับทุนการศึกษาจากบริษัทที่เขาทำงานในประเทศไทย และสอบเข้าเรียนปริญญาโทวิศวกรรมศาสตร์ที่มหาวิทยาลัยโคลัมเบีย ไกด์ขอคําแนะนําช่วงทานข้าวกันที่กรุงเทพ พวกเรากินคุยกันแทบทุกเรื่องยกเว้นเรื่องเรียน อย่างไรก็ตามตอนท้ายฉันบอกเขาว่า “อย่าเรียนอย่างเดียว ออกไปพบปะผู้คน พูดคุยกับพวกเขา…และออกไปดูโลก”
คงมีคนผิดหวังกับคําแนะนํานี้ ผมพูดต่อว่า ไกด์เรียนได้เกรด A มาตลอด การเรียน
จึงไม่น่ามีปัญหาอะไร เพียงแต่ความรู้เหล่านั้นอาจไม่เพียงพอ
ได้ยกตัวอย่างการประชุมกับ Pottery Barn ซึ่งเป็นลูกค้าที่ใหญ่ที่สุดและสําคัญที่สุดของบริษัทเรา โดยปกติจะมีนักออกแบบ ฝ่ายซื้อ ฝ่ายจัดหาและผู้ช่วย บางครั้งผู้จัดการสินค้าทั่วไปหรือแม้แต่ประธานบริษัทจะเข้าร่วมการประชุม พวกเราเตรียมทุกอย่างให้พร้อม เทียนถูกแกะออกและตั้งไว้ตรงกลางโต๊ะพร้อมพนักงานส่วนใหญ่อยู่ในห้องแล้ว แต่เราต้องรอท่านประธานจึงไม่มีการพูดถึงการซื้อขายเทียน ช่วง ๕-๑๐
นาทีที่รอ เวลาจะผ่านไปอย่างรวดเร็วถ้าเราสามารถพูดคุยเรื่องทั่วไปไม่ว่าจะเกี่ยวกับอาหาร กีฬา อาหารการกิน เศรษฐกิจ หรือเรื่องสนุกโปกฮา แต่หากทุกคนต่างรอด้วยความเงียบไม่มีการสนทนา เพียงไม่กี่นาทีก็จะเกิดการอึดอัด
ประมาณหนึ่งปีต่อมา เราบังเอิญเจอกันและได้นั่งกินบะหมี่พูดคุยกัน ไกด์บอกว่าเขาชอบชิคาโก เพิ่งกลับจากฮาวาย และจะไปลุยยุโรปช่วงปิดกลางเทอมฤดูใบไม้ผลิ ประมาณหนึ่งชั่วโมงในร้านอาหาร เราแทบไม่ได้พูด
