‘Doesn’t seem you are poor!’
I was prejudged by an academic officer who worked in the scholarship department. He wanted to make sure the students who qualified for the grants were from low-income families. He didn’t believe what I told him so he put me on probation; receiving free meals in exchange for doing physical jobs.
They were odd jobs which I didn’t mind and they could be done on the weekends, such as picking up seeds from trees for the department’s nursery, lawn mowing in between buildings, painting the fences, digging mud in the polluted streams around the campus. After a year, those jobs were lifted because it became clear that I was poor or I wouldn’t dare to go out and do those janitor’s works for the whole year.
I should be upset about this, shouldn’t I? No, not at all. It’s nobody fault. The officer was merely doing his job and at Kasetsart University, which had the lowest tuition fees at that time, happened to have lots of students from low-income families.
Besides, proving myself had been a good part of my life.

“เธอดูไม่จนเลยนี่”
อาจารย์ฝ่ายการศึกษาเรียกให้เข้าไปพบและบอกว่าเราน่าจะสละสิทธิ์ทุนเรียนดีและยากจน เพราะมีนิสิตที่จนกว่า เราจะบอกอะไรอย่างไรอาจารย์ก็ไม่เชื่อทีเดียว จึงตกลงให้ทุนแต่ต้องทำงานโยธา เช่นเก็บเมล็ดกระถินณรงค์ ตัดหญ้าสนามหน้าตึกเรียน ทาสีรั้ว ขุดรอกคลองรอบเกษตร
ทำครบปี อาจารย์ก็เชื่อว่าเราจนจริงเพราะไม่งั้นคงไม่ทนที่จะทำงานภารโรงเหล่านั้น จึงได้รับทุนโดยไม่ต้องทำงานอะไรอีกต่อไป
เราน่าจะโกรธอาจารย์ใช่ไหม แต่ไม่เลย เพราะไม่ใช่ความผิดของใคร อาจารย์ท่านก็ทำตามหน้าที่ที่จะต้องคัดกรองให้แน่ใจว่าผู้ที่รับทุนนอกจากเรียนดีก็ยังเป็นเด็กยากจน ซึ่งเป็นงานที่ไม่ง่ายเลยเพราะมหาวิทยาลัยเกษตรศาสตร์ช่วงนั้นค่าเทอมหน่วยกิตถูกมาก จึงมีนักเรียนจากครอบครัวที่มีรายได้น้อยมาสมัครเรียนมากกว่าที่อื่น
จะว่าไปแล้วเราก็ชินด้วยแหละ เพราะการพิสูจน์ตัวเองเป็นส่วนนึงของชีวิตเรา
