College Fund
‘Borrowed 500 Baht each month for four years and paid back 600 Baht monthly for four years after college, was it fair?’
An American friend once asked me about the loan that I had for my college expenses. He didn’t think it was anything special in comparing with what he had borrowed from the U.S. Government. But it was indeed a big deal for me at that time and still feel grateful up till nowadays.
1969 was the year that my friends and I took the national exams for further studying in colleges. I got accepted by Kasetsart University in Bangkok. Though, the tuition fees at that time were so nominal, only 5 Baht (25 cents) for a credit-hour, there were also room and broad and other expenses when I had to live my life far away from home. I still remembered well that my home town friends emptied their pockets and put the money in my palms for the bus tickets. Nevertheless, without the loan, I might not be able to go to college.
Now in 2021, Thailand still doesn’t have college loan from its government. I was very fortunate that our landlord who had been seeing me growing up, promptly agreed with the loan proposal. Perhaps, it was his kind-hearted support that propelled me to excel in college.

ยืมเงินเรียนมหาลัย
‘ยืม ๕๐๐ บาทต่อเดือนติดต่อกันสี่ปีแล้วจ่ายคืนเดือนละ ๖๐๐ บาทเป็นเวลาสี่ปี ไม่เห็นมีอะไรดีพิเศษ’
เพื่อนชาวอเมริกันเค้าเอาไปเทียบกับระบบเงินกู้ที่รัฐบาลอเมริกันมีให้นักศึกษามหาวิทยาลัยซึ่งในสัญญามีดอกเบี้ยต่ำมาก เพราะรัฐบาลต้องการส่งเสริมให้คนได้เรียนในระดับอุดมศึกษา เราจึงได้แจกแจงถึงความแตกต่างและบอกเขาว่าเงินกู้ยืมนี้มีความสำคัญต่อเรามาก
๒๕๑๒ เป็นปีที่เราจบมศ.๕ และสอบเข้าได้ที่มหาวิทยาลัยเกษตรศาสตร์ ในเวลานั้นค่าเรียนถูกมาก เพียง ๕ บาทต่อหนึ่งหน่วยกิต แต่ก็ต้องมีค่ากินค่าหอพักค่าใช้สอยเพราะเราจากบ้านไปเรียนในกรุงเทพ วันจะไปมอบตัวเพื่อนๆต่างควักกระเป๋าให้เงินเราเป็นค่าเดินทางค่าอาหาร แต่เราคงจะไม่ได้ไปเรียนหากไม่มีเงินกู้นี้
ทุกวันนี้ประเทศไทยก็ยังไม่มีระบบเงินที่จะให้นักศึกษากู้เพื่อเรียนขั้นอุดมศึกษา นับว่าโชคดีที่เจ้าของบ้านที่เห็นเราเติบโตมายินดีสนับสนุนให้กู้เงินเรียนโดยไม่ต้องมีอะไรเป็นหลักประกัน อาจจะด้วยความรู้สึกดีๆที่เราได้รับจากคุณเกียรติ อินทรกำแหง เจ้าของบ้านที่มีใจเมตตาจุนเจือช่วยให้เรามีกำลังใจและเรียนได้ผลดีตลอดสี่ปี
