Blocks are not Just for Playing with!
At first glance into Tuxedo Park School’s pre-kindergarten classroom,
visitors might assume the young students gathered around a new block table are merely playing. However, block play incorporates all areas of social and emotional learning for the school’s youngest students. The students are benefiting from a unique block table constructed in Thailand that were donated
by schoolparents, Niwat and Vantanee Kitirattragarn.
According to the school’s Early Childhood Center’s director, Kathy Waggoner. The students use blocks for every unit of study. Whether it is language arts, socialization, math, science, or social studies, blocks are an important part of our day, Waggoner said. For example, students might build a ramp, and we will talk about inclines. They will build towers,
and we will compare them to determine which is taller,
What we see most often is that children will recreate their experiences in the block area by constructing something they have studied or visited on a field trip Blocks also give children opportunities to explore their talents and develop their special skills and interests, Waggoner explained. Because blocks aren’t threatening, children can explore their interests, whether it is the builder who enjoys creating structures, the architect who gives directions, the artist who adds accessories to the structure, or the dramatic player who creates or interprets an imaginative world. The pre-kindergarten teachers turned the new block table donation into an opportunity for study with the children.
When they first heard of the gift last fall, the children searched a map with their teachers to find the country of Thailand where the block table was being constructed. During its transportation, students discussed how the table would travel from Thailand to the United States on a freighter.
When the table arrived in late March, the students immediately benefited from its unique qualities. The table curves in and out, which allows more children to use it. Children are also closer to each other than around a traditional rectangular table, allowing for more interaction and collaborative play. The table also has brought the blocks to a different perspective rather than being on the floor, the children are using blocks at a higher level, and the creations are different than those built on the floor.
While the new table is housed in the pre-kindergarten classroom, children in every grade will have an opportunity to use the area as they study math, science and social studies. Students at Tuxedo Park School find the new block table, which was donated by Niwat and Vantanee Kitirattragarn, helpful in using blocks in more advanced ways, as they study math, science and social studies.

ตัวต่อไม้ ไม่ได้มีไว้สำหรับเล่นเท่านั้น

ทางโรงเรียนได้ใช้โต๊ะบล็อคเป็นโอกาสในการเรียนรู้ร่วมกัน เมื่อเด็กๆทราบเกี่ยวกับของขวัญชิ้นนี้เมื่อฤดูใบไม้ร่วงปีที่แล้ว พวกเขาได้ช่วยกันหาแผนที่กับครูเพื่อค้นหาประเทศไทยที่เป็นที่มาของโต๊ะบล็อคที่กำลังถูกสร้างขึ้น และพูดคุยกันว่าโต๊ะพร้อมตัวต่อ จะเดินทางจากประเทศไทยไปยังสหรัฐอเมริกาโดยทางไหน อย่างไร
เมื่อโต๊ะมาถึงในปลายเดือนมีนาคม นักเรียนก็ได้รับประโยชน์ทันทีจากคุณสมบัติที่เป็นเอกลักษณ์ของโต๊ะนี้ โต๊ะโค้งเข้าและออกเป็นทรงหยดน้ำ ช่วยให้เด็กๆได้ใช้โต๊ะได้สะดวก เด็กๆยืนอยู่ใกล้กันกว่าโต๊ะเหลี่ยม ช่วยให้มีปฏิสัมพันธ์และเล่นร่วมกันได้มากขึ้น โต๊ะยังได้นำบล็อคไปสู่มุมมองที่แตกต่างแทนที่จะอยู่บนพื้น เด็กได้ใช้บล็อคในระดับที่สูงกว่าสะดวกที่จะโยกย้ายหยิบโน่นต่อนี่
แม้ว่าโต๊ะตัวใหม่จะจัดอยู่ในห้องสมุดชั้นอนุบาล แต่เด็กชั้นอื่นก็เข้ามาใช้มาเล่นโต็ะบล็อคตัวนี้ได้
