Analogy

“Vance, pictures yourself as a car, a good old reliable car which some parts like transmission, need to be fixed after years of running. I would, if I were you, fix the car instead of put it to the junk yard. This is an investment not an expenditure.” Dr. G, my primary doctor, simplified his answer about the question whether I should do the blood cancer treatments. The analogy led me back to the year 1978, when I had my very first car.

It was Plymouth Station Wagon 1962, the model that had wood trimmed inside out. $500 was posted on the wall at Wood Product Engineering department in SUNY, at Syracuse. The 15 years old car was sold to me at $450. The body was in good shape, the engine however, refused to work right after I became the owner of this bulky but charm wagon. A mechanic suggested me after thoroughly checking the car that, the best way to fix was finding a rebuilt engine. Yes, changed the whole engine of this 8-cylinder, 6-liter wagon. I nevertheless, felt better after I heard that it would probably cost me $300-400 in total in rebuilding the car. I bought the news to the seller, happened to be a professor in the department. He unwillingly but gave me back $100. So, the car was fixed and run for a few years. With the leaks of oil and transmission fluid, coping with high, very high gas consumption, the car was finally put to sleep in a junk yard. I had had great ride with the old horse. I continued to have so many different cars, used and new, but the one which I remember the most is my buddy, the good old wagon. I couldn’t help but compare those cars with my condition; fix it as doctor’s prescription, the treatments which could be never end, or find alternative ways to live the rest of my life.

รถคันแรก

“แวนซ์ ลองนึกภาพตัวเองว่าเป็นรถ รถเก่าที่สภาพยังดีอยู่แต่มีบางส่วนเช่นเกียร์ต้องซ่อมแซมเพราะวิ่งมาหลายปี ถ้าผมเป็นคุณ ผมจะซ่อมรถแทนที่จะนำไปทิ้ง นี่คือการลงทุนไม่ใช่รายจ่าย”ดร.จี หมอประจำตัว ตอบง่ายๆกับคำถามที่ว่าเราควรทำการรักษามะเร็งเม็ดเลือดหรือไม่  การอุปมาอุปไมยนี้ทำให้เรานึกย้อนกลับไปในปี ๑๙๗๘ ภาพของรถคันแรกปรากฎขึ้นมาอย่างชัดเจนมันคือพลีมัธ สเตชั่น แวกอน ปี ๑๙๖๒ ซึ่งเป็นรุ่นตัวถังเป็นไม้ ๕๕๐ ดอลลาร์ เป็นราคาประกาศขายบนผนังที่แผนก Wood Product Engineering ใน SUNY ที่ Syracuse  รถอายุ ๑๕ ปีตกลงซื้อได้ที่ $๔๕๐ สภาพของรถเก่าคันนี้ดูทั่วๆไปยังดี แต่เครื่องยนต์สิไม่ยอมทำงานหลังจากที่เราเป็นเจ้าของ ช่างแนะนำให้เปลี่ยนตัวเครื่อง ใช่ เปลี่ยนเครื่องยนต์ทั้งหมดของรถ ๘ สูบ ๖๐๐๐ cc เรารู้สึกดีขึ้นหลังจากได้ยินว่าในการนี้มีค่าใช้จ่าย ๓๐๐-๔๐๐ ดอลลาร์ ซึ่งตกลงกันได้ที่ $๓๐๐  เรากลับไปบอกคนขายที่บังเอิญเป็นอาจารย์ในแผนก เขาไม่เต็มใจแต่ก็คืนเงิน ๑๐๐ ดอลลาร์ รถขับกว่าสามปี  ด้วยการรั่วไหลของน้ำมันเครื่องและน้ำมันเกียร์ ทั้งยังกินน้ำมันมากเพราะเครื่องใหญ่มาก ในที่สุดอายุขัยของรถคันนี้ก็หมดลง  หลังจากนั้นเรามีรถอีกหลายคันทั้งมือสองและรถใหม่ป้ายแดง แต่คันที่ฉันจดจำได้มากที่สุดคือเพื่อนซี้ Plymouth Station Wagon ๑๙๖๒  อดไม่ได้ที่จะเปรียบเทียบรถเหล่านั้นกับสภาพของเรา จะซ่อมแซมตามที่แพทย์สั่งการรักษาที่ยังมองไม่เห็นปลายทางและอาจไม่มีวันสิ้นสุด หรือหาทางเลือกอื่นที่จะเป็นแนวทางให้กับชีวิตที่เหลือ
