A Kick in the Teeth – บทเรียนชีวิต

The quote reminded me of quite a number of things that unpleasantly had happened to me. They were awkward, embarrassed, disappointed. Though, most of them had been quite some time ago, I still remember some of them distinctly.
My name was on the list of the students who eligible for further study at Chulalongkorn, the most famous university in Thailand. But it was only less than a week later that my name was eventually deleted. Well, I failed the oral interview. It was because there were 3 interviewers that students would have to see and talk to all of them. I was negligent and imprudent in doing the interview. Thank goodness, there was second round of calling from Kasetsart University.
A couple years earlier, I was sent to work and live with a family in Chiyaphum, a province 100 miles northeast of my hometown, Korat. It was meant for me to start working and learning how to do business from the bottom up. A few weeks later, I was sent home because they thought my continual nose breeding could be a contagious disease or even tuberculosis. Luckily, I went home just in time for continuing my last two years of high school.
And ways back when my sister and I (we were in the same class from second grade) finished our elementary school, the principal of the school, Ruttanopas, came to our house and asked my parents to let my sister continue her study at the school with full scholarship. My name was never brought up. I felt like I was not even existed.
After finished my degree at Syracuse, I wanted to learn to do business in the US. We started renting garage from our landlord. Gradually, the inventory kept increasing so we went out and leased a small store in the flower market of Manhattan. Upon finishing the negotiation, I asked the landlord whether there was a broker fee. The man of course, said yes. And I ended up paying one month of rent more than I supposed to.
It was $550 which is not that much in comparing with what I have learned how to do negotiations in the past four decades of my business life.
The failed interview taught me how to be well prepared for the important meetings. I was perhaps provoked by the school principle who pay no attention to me, consequently I had tried to do better in schools. All in all, I take things as opportunities which have been granted to me since my high school.

บทเรียนชีวิต

คําพูดนี้ทําให้นึกถึงหลายสิ่งหลายอย่างที่เกิดขึ้นในชีวิตเรา ต่างเป็นเรื่องผิดพลาด อึดอัด เขินอาย ผิดหวัง แม้ว่าจะนานมาแล้วแต่ยังจําบางเรื่องได้อย่างชัดเจน
เราสอบข้อเขียนติดกระดานจุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย แต่ไม่ถึงหนึ่งสัปดาห์ต่อมาชื่อก็ถูกลบออก เพราะสอบตกสัมภาษณ์ คือมีผู้สัมภาษณ์ ๓ คน ด้วยความประมาทเลินเล่อเราเดินออกจากห้องหลังจากการสัมภาษณ์คนแรก นับว่าโชคดีที่มีการเรียกรอบสองจากมหาวิทยาลัยเกษตรศาสตร์
เมื่อสองสามปีก่อนหน้านั้น เราถูกส่งไปทํางานและอาศัยอยู่กับครอบครัวที่จังหวัดชัยภูมิซึ่งห่างไกลจากบ้านโคราชกว่าร้อยกิโลเมตร แต่เพียงไม่กี่สัปดาห์ก็ถูกส่งกลับโคราชเพราะเลือดกำเดาไหลเสมอ ทางญาติคิดว่าอาจเป็นโรคติดต่อ เรากลับบ้านทันเวลาเรียนต่อมศ ๔-๕
ย้อนกลับไปตอนเป็นเด็ก เราและพี่สาว(ที่เรียนชั้นเดียวกันตั้งแต่ชั้นประถมศึกษาปีที่ ๒) พอเรียนจบชั้นประถม ๗ ครูใหญ่โรงเรียนรัตโนภาสมาที่บ้านเพื่อขอให้พ่อแม่ให้พี่สาวเรียนต่อที่โรงเรียนและจะให้ทุนการศึกษาเต็มที่ อาจารย์ไม่ได้เอ่ยชื่อเราหรือแม้แต่มองหน้า ฉันรู้สึกเหมือนไม่มีตัวตน
หลังจากเรียนจบปริญญาโทที่มหาวิทยาลัยเซราคิว ฉันต้องการเรียนรู้การทําธุรกิจในสหรัฐอเมริกา จึงเริ่มด้วยการเช่าโรงรถเก็บสินค้า กิจการขยายเราจึงไปเช่าร้านเล็กๆ ในตลาดดอกไม้ของแมนฮัตตัน ตกลงสัญญาเช่ากันได้แล้ว ฉันถามเจ้าของตึกถึงค่าธรรมเนียมนายหน้า จึงลงเอยด้วยการต้องจ่ายเงินเพิ่มขึ้นกว่าที่ควร
๕๕๐ ดอลลาร์ที่ไม่ควรต้องจ่าย แต่ก็ไม่มากนักเมื่อเทียบกับสิ่งที่เราได้เรียนรู้วิธีการเจรจาในช่วงสี่ทศวรรษที่ผ่านมาของชีวิตธุรกิจของเรา การตกสัมภาษณ์สอนถึงวิธีการเตรียมพร้อมสําหรับการประชุมที่สําคัญ โดยรวมแล้วเราใช้ความผิดพลาดเป็นครู
