A Doctor…An Educator…A Forester
“Are you a doctor?” Ken asked me when we were on out tennis break. “There, you are an educator.” He continued saying after knowing I was not a doctor of any kind. I was quite surprised that Ken raised this question all the sudden. We seldomly talked when we played tennis simply because he usually wore his ear pods. It’s ok with me so I could focus on hitting the tennis balls. But, when Ken took the thing off, he could talk and could be interesting subjects.
I was more a listener than speaker. So, I never walked away or payed no attention to what he said. Actually, I found his stories interesting. He told me about his mom, his siblings, his life when he was young. He blamed himself for not be able to get into a medical school like his sister. He seemed to not happy with his carpenter business.
This was not the first time that people mistakenly thought I was a doctor, but never once an educator. It led me to think of Eddie who could talk about just anything from food, wine, living, fixing, economy, politic, life in general, and jokes, of course. His relax, easy going and talkative enumerated the trust worthy to his personality. People often called my friend ‘Professor Eddie’, including me.
An educator, to me, is not a profession. it is a person who has passion in creating the better society. Thomas Jefferson was a very good example. On his tomb, rather than stating the third President of the United States, he left specific instruction and wanted to be remembered as the author of the Decoration of Independence and Father of University of Virginia. Thomas Jefferson was truly an educator.
‘I am a forester.’ Ken didn’t say anything after hearing from me, he went to pick up his racquet. While walking on the court, the guy said “I see a lot of trees in you.”
I was not sure it was a compliment but I was happy to take it.

”คุณเป็นหมอหรือเปล่า” เคนถามขึ้นมาช่วงเราพักเล่นเทนนิส
“หรือเป็นนักการศึกษา” เคนพูดต่อหลังจากรู้ว่าเราไม่ใช่หมอ ค่อนข้างแปลกใจที่เคนตั้งคําถามนี้ คือเราไม่ค่อยได้คุยเพราะเคนมักจะสวมหูฟังเพลงช่วงเล่นเทนนิส
นี่ไม่ใช่ครั้งแรกที่คนเข้าใจผิดคิดว่าเราเป็นหมอ แต่ไม่เคยมีใครทักว่าเราเป็นนักการศึกษา ทําให้นึกถึงเอ็ดดี้ที่สามารถพูดเกี่ยวกับอะไรก็ได้ตั้งแต่อาหาร ไวน์ เศรษฐกิจ การเมือง การใช้ชีวิตโดยทั่วไปรวมถึงเรื่องตลกโปกฮา ผู้คนขนานนามให้เอ็ดดี้ว่าเป็น “ศาสตราจารย์เอ็ดดี้” รวมถึงเราด้วย เราคิดว่า นักการศึกษาไม่ใช่อาชีพแต่เป็นคนที่อยากจะสร้างสรรค์สังคมที่ดีขึ้น โธมัส เจฟเฟอร์สันนับเป็นตัวอย่างที่ดี ที่บนหลุมฝังศพของเขา แทนที่จะระบุว่าเป็นประธานาธิบดีคนที่สามของสหรัฐอเมริกา เขาเพียงต้องการให้คนจดจำในฐานะผู้เขียน Decoration of Independence และเป็นบิดาแห่งมหาวิทยาลัยเวอร์จิเนีย จึงนับได้ว่ารัฐบุรุษผู้นี้เป็นนักการศึกษาอย่างแท้จริง
‘ฉันเป็นคนป่าไม้’ เคนไม่ได้พูดอะไรหลังจากทราบว่าเราเรียนมาทางไหน เขาหยิบไม้เทนนิสเดินลงสนามและเกริ่นออกมา “ฉันเห็นอะไรหลายอย่างในตัวคุณ” เราไม่แน่ใจว่านั่นเป็นคําชม แต่มีความยินดีที่จะรับไว้
