A Convenient Store in Korat
‘May I buy a box of matches?’ The voice echoed along the banging at the front door. And the boy who was just grown up enough to wear his own shoes, was stretching his arm through the slot of the rusted metal doors to take the matches and said to JJ that he didn’t have money and asked JJ to put it in the book. The boy then ran off.
It was well after the store hours; 6 am to 9 pm daily. The people in the neighborhood took liberty in coming and knocking on the door after the hours and JJ never turned them away. Her store was in the backroad and was filled with dry goods and merchandise for the household; rice, sugars, salt, beans, sardines, sauces, soft drinks, soaps, detergents, candles, matches, lamps, kerosene etc. JJ nonetheless unpacked most of those merchandise and sold it loosely to her less affordable customers. The matches for example, there were 10 small boxes bundled in a package.
Some of those became the bestselling items. The most popular one was the popsicle which JJ poured Pepsi from its bottle into small bags and kept frozen. It was very affordable for our neighborhood. The kids came and got together in front of the store, some came straight after school to buy Pepsi popsicle from JJ.
Then was the next round of customers. This group came well after the kids went home. They gathered around a small wobbly table at the front and asked JJ for a shot or two of Thai whisky, local vodka. There were peeled tamarind and salt as the complement but there was no counter or chair to sit. With the fuzzy little glass of those frugal spirits in their hands, they stood chatting just about anything. Often, those men were talking to themselves. It’s indeed their happy time even for only a few minutes. There seemed to be sincere smiles on their wrinkled faces when saying goodbye to JJ before they vanished.
Of course, some time those steady customers, per se, had no money in their pockets, just like the kid who came to knock on the door at night. JJ then had to do bookkeeping even though some of the transactions were only one cent. Sometimes, I wondered how JJ could find those particular books, since a good number of them were entitled to have their own books. Well, the kid and his mom had one book exclusively for themselves,
Did they take advantage of JJ? Rather, I would say my oldest sister who was at the store working at all time, was an important part of the community.

เจริญสิน – ร้านสะดวกซื้อในโคราช
‘เจ้ เจ้ ขอซื้อไม้ขีดไฟกล่องนึง’ เสียงนั้นดังก้องที่ประตูหน้าร้าน มีเด็กชายที่โตพอที่จะใส่รองเท้าให้ตัวเองได้ ยืดแขนผ่านช่องบานพับประตูเหล็ก พอได้กล่องไม้ขีดไฟก็กำไว้แน่นและบอกเจ้จูว่าเขาไม่มีเงินขอให้ลงบัญชีไว้ก่อน แล้วเด็กชายก็วิ่งกลับบ้านไป
ตอนนั้นเป็นเวลาหลังสามทุ่มร้านปิดแล้ว แต่ผู้คนในละแวกนั้นขาดเหลืออะไรก็จะมาเคาะประตูหน้าร้านโดยไม่สนใจเวลาเปิดปิดเพราะรู้ว่าเจ้จูไม่เคยหันหลังให้พวกเขา ร้านเจริญสินอยู่บนถนนหลังตลาดหลักเมืองโคราช ขายโชห่วยพวกของแห้งและสินค้าสำหรับครัวเรือน ข้าว น้ำตาล เกลือ ถั่ว ปลากระป๋อง ซีอิ้ว น้ำปลา น้ำอัดลม สบู่ ผงซักฟอก เทียน ไม้ขีดไฟ ตะเกียง น้ำมันก๊าด ฯลฯ ส่วนมากเจ้จูแกะกล่องสินค้าแบ่งขายย่อย เช่นไม้ขีดไฟหนึ่งห่อมีสิบกล่อง ราคาทุนสองบาทแบ่งขายกล่องละสลึง
บางอย่างกลายเป็นสินค้าขายดี ที่ได้รับความนิยมมากที่สุดคือไอติมที่เจ้จูเทเป๊ปซี่จากขวดใส่ถุงเล็กๆแช่แข็ง เด็กๆมาจับกลุ่มกันหน้าร้านหลังเลิกเรียนแย่งกันซื้อไอติมเป๊ปซี่ของเจ้จู
จากนั้นก็เป็นลูกค้ากลุ่มที่มาหลังจากเด็กๆกลับบ้าน พวกเขามายืนกันรอบโต๊ะโยกเยกที่หน้าร้าน และขอเจ้จูรินเหล้าขาวขายให้ทีละกั๊ก (กั๊กละบาท) บนโต๊ะมีมะขามและเกลือเป็นกับแกล้มให้ แต่ไม่มีเคาน์เตอร์หรือเก้าอี้ให้นั่ง จิบเหล้าไปพวกเขายืนคุยกันเรื่องสัพเพเหระ บ่อยครั้งที่เขาเหล่านั้นพูดพึมพำกับตัวเอง มันเป็นเวลาแห่งความสุขของพวกเขาแม้จะเพียงไม่กี่นาที ดูเหมือนจะมีรอยยิ้มที่จริงใจบนใบหน้าเหี่ยวย่นของพวกเขาเมื่อบอกลาเจ้จูก่อนที่พวกเขาจะเดินหายไปบนถนนซอยหน้าร้าน
ไม่ต่างกันมากกับเด็กที่มาเคาะประตู หลายครั้งลูกค้าขาประจำเหล่านั้นไม่มีเงินติดกระเป๋า เจ้จูจึงต้องบันทึกลงบัญชีถึงแม้ว่าบางรายการจะมีราคาเพียงหนึ่งสลึง ก็สงสัยว่าเจ้ใหญ่เราพลิกหน้ากระดาษหาลูกค้าแต่ละคนได้อย่างไร เพราะเท่าที่เห็นก็มักจะซื้อก่อนจ่ายทีหลังกันแทบทุกราย
พวกเขาเอาเปรียบเจ้จูหรือเปล่า
ไม่นะ พี่สาวคนโตของพวกเราทำงานหนักเปิดร้านตลอดเวลาและเต็มใจช่วยเหลือชาวบ้านเป็นการผ่อนปรนให้กับชุมชน
