Fortune Tellers
‘You will soon be going aboard!’
With astonishing, I pull my hand back and asked my lady friend ‘What, really, for how long?’ She asked to see my palm again and then said ‘at least two years, and it could be up to three-four years’. At that moment, I was kind of freaked out and wondered how she could tell of what I had been planning to do with my life.
That was in 1976. I wanted to come to the US and the only way to make it happen was to get a scholarship. There were not many education grants at that time, but there was one that I could apply for, it was Thai Government Scholarship. I didn’t tell anyone including my siblings and mom. It’s because I didn’t think I would pass the exams and be the only one that qualified for this prestige scholarship. About a week after my lady friend told me of my future, I brought the letter confirming the scholarship with me, showed to her with admirably wonder “How could you precisely tell my future?” I have been trying to avoid seeing a fortune teller because I don’t know
I could take bad news way ahead of time. Or, I would want to hear only the good news. Well, you could try to keep yourself away from something, it doesn’t mean you wouldn’t run into that thing. Not long ago, my wife came back from visiting her mother in Bangkok. There were lots of things and stories to tell me including the words from a fortune teller saying about me. ‘Was that good or bad?’ “It’s not good.” ‘May I not hear this.’ Apparently, I was too late. “You will be gravely ill at 64. If you are survived, you would live only till 66.’ Well, I’m now 68 turning 69 years old. Thanks goodness, there are some not so good in fortune telling, aren’t they?
หมอดูคู่กับหมอเดา
‘นิวัตรจะได้ไปเมืองนอกนี่’
ด้วยความประหลาดใจเราดึงมือกลับมา และถามเพื่อนสาวหมอดูที่ทำงานด้วยกัน ‘อย่างงั้นเหรอ แล้วจะอยู่นานเท่าไหร่’ เธอขอดูมืออีกครั้งและชี้ให้เห็นไฝแดงบนฝ่ามือขวาระหว่างโคนนิ้วกลางกับนิ้วนางและบอกเราว่า ‘อย่างน้อยสองปี อาจจะสามหรือสี่ปี’ เอ้ เธอรู้ได้อย่างไร เมื่อปี ๒๕๑๙ เรามีความตั้งใจที่อยากจะไปเรียนต่อที่สหรัฐอเมริกาและวิธีเดียวที่จะเป็นไปได้ก็โดยการสอบชิงทุน สมัยนั้นทุนการศึกษาไม่ค่อยจะมี เผอิญมีทุนรัฐบาล(ทุนก.พ.) จึงไปสมัครสอบแต่ไม่ได้บอกใคร รวมถึงญาติพี่น้องเพราะไม่คิดว่าจะสอบได้ เผอิญปีนั้นมีให้เพียงทุนเดียว ประมาณหนึ่งสัปดาห์หลังจากคำทำนายเราเอาผลสอบไปให้เพื่อนดูและชมเขาว่า ‘ทำไมถึงทายได้แม่นจัง’
เราไม่ชอบให้หมอดูทำนายทายทัก เพราะไม่อยากรับทราบเรื่องอะไรที่ไม่ดีล่วงหน้า และการที่เราจะหลบหนีอะไรก็ไม่ใช่ว่าเราจะไม่เจอ อ๋อยกลับมาจากเยี่ยมแม่ เรามีเรื่องคุยกันมากมายรวมทั้งที่ไปหาหมอดู เราได้เอาวันเกิด เวลาตกฟากของเราให้หมอดูดวงให้เราด้วย
เราขอทราบแต่เรื่องดีดีแต่ก็ช้าไป ‘อายุ ๖๔ จะเจ็บหนัก ถ้ารอดก็จะอยู่ถึง ๖๖’
เอ้อ ตอนนี้อายุเรา ๖๘ ย่าง ๖๙ แล้ว ก็นับว่าโชคดีนะที่มีหมอเดาปะปนอยู่ด้วย
