Degrees of Happiness
There have been so many descriptions about happiness. Let’s hear some of them:
‘Happiness is the meaning and purpose of life, the whole aim and end of human existence.’ -Aristotle

There have also been studies and efforts to measure and gauge happiness into different levels. I would however, like to categorize happinesses based solely from my own experience. There were things, works, events, procedures, challenges, contests which have brought joys into my life and I would align them into the order of Satisfaction, Accomplishment, Unexpected and Beyond expectation.
Level 1 – Satisfaction
It’s fortunate for me to say at the very least that I am able to enjoy this level of happiness daily by walking around my neighborhood, rain or shine. It’s fascinating to see the movement and the change of the leaves, twigs, branches during the cause of the seasons, to watch the mother deers nervously protecting their fawns, squirrels running and jumping from trees to trees. They are peaceful and meditative. And there seems to have something new for me to see to notice in every time I go out walking.
Spending could also be a happy event if we end up with good deals. Getting the Volvo at 15% less than the sticker price was one of them.
Level 2 – Accomplishment
Be able to execute the negotiations exactly as planned, is a good sense of an accomplishment. Buying the car for Pom, my niece, was fit this type of happiness.
Visiting our customers, chatting with them and seeing our candles lined up on the shelves in their stores brings me joy as well. The feeling when our showrooms/booths were filled with customers are second to none. It confirmed that our hard work didn’t go to drain. This category of happiness made me think of how Thai Government agreed with my request and sending me from Finland to study in the U.S..
Level 3 – Unexpected
Being number one in my college was something that I had never planned for. Went up on the stage every year to receive the medal from the King of Thailand was definitely not my expectation. Vincent was be able to transfer from Rutgers to Cornell and Andrew was the student speaker at his graduation were quite unexpected.
Be able to continue my high school and went all the way to Kasetsart University was never on my radar. Tour America from coast to coast in 1978 was also the thing that I could never think of.
Level 4 – Beyond Expectation
Silk Flowers, Villa Baskets, Timber Candles, Coconut Chips are perfectly fit in this top tier of happiness. They were/are not only selling so well, but were well over our expectations, and also bringing our families together. However, these would perhaps not happen if I didn’t receive Thai Government Scholarship to study and live in U.S.A. The fact was that I didn’t tell anyone when I took the contest simply because I had never thought I would be the only one who won the scholarship. In a plain word, it was beyond my expectation. Yes, winning the scholarship is indeed at the top of the chart.

นอกจากนี้ยังมีการศึกษาและความพยายามในการจัดและวัดความสุขในระดับต่างๆ ข้างล่างเป็นการจัดหมวดหมู่ความสุขตามประสบการณ์ของตนเอง จากการงาน เหตุการณ์ต่างๆที่พบเจอ ความท้าทาย การแข่งขัน ฯลฯ ที่นําความปิติ จึงได้จัดเรียงตามลําดับ ความพึงพอใจ ความสําเร็จ ที่ไม่คาดคิด และเหนือความคาดหมาย
ระดับ ๑ ความพึงพอใจ
นับว่าโชคดีที่สามารถพูดได้ว่า เราเพลิดเพลินกับความสุขระดับนี้ทุกวัน ด้วยการเดินไปรอบๆ ละแวกบ้านไม่ว่าฝนตกหรือแดดออก ได้เห็นการเคลื่อนไหวและการเปลี่ยนแปลงของใบไม้ กิ่งไม้ ในช่วงฤดูกาล เห็นแม่กวางปกป้องลูกน้อย กระรอกวิ่งและกระโดดจากต้นไปอีกต้น
การใช้จ่าย อาจเป็นเหตุการณ์ที่บรรดาลความสุขหากเราได้ข้อเสนอที่ดี การซื้อรถวอลโว่ได้ในราคาต่ำกว่าราคาสติกเกอร์ 15% ก็นับได้เป็นหนึ่งในนี้
ระดับ ๒ ความสําเร็จ
ความสำเร็จในการเจรจาและได้ผลตามที่วางแผนไว้ เป็นความรู้สึกที่ดี ที่ช่วยปอมซื้อรถ ก็เป็นความสุขประเภทนี้ การไปเยี่ยมลูกค้าพูดคุยกับพวกเขา และเห็นเทียนของเราเรียงประดับประดาในร้านทําให้เรามีความรู้สึกดี ความรู้สึกเมื่อโชว์รูม/บูธที่งานโชว์ของเราเต็มไปด้วยลูกค้าเป็นการยืนยันว่าการทํางานหนักของเราไม่สูญเปล่า และที่รัฐบาลไทยเห็นด้วยกับคําขอของเราอนุมัติให้ย้ายจากฟินแลนด์ไปศึกษาต่อที่สหรัฐอเมริกา
ระดับ ๓ ที่ไม่คาดคิด
การสอบได้เป็นอันดับหนึ่งในมหาวิทยาลัยเป็นสิ่งที่ไม่เคยคิด ได้ขึ้นเวทีทุกปี รับเหรียญจากในหลวงไม่ใช่ความคาดหวังอย่างแน่นอน วินเซนต์สามารถย้ายมหาวิทยาลัยจากรัทเกอร์ ไปเรียนคอร์แนลล์ และ แอนดรูว์ได้เป็นตัวแทนของบัณฑิตห้าพันกว่าคนที่สําเร็จการศึกษารุ่นเดียวกันขึ้นไปกล่าวบนปรัมพิธีที่มหาวิทยาลัยแคลิฟอร์เนียที่ซานตาบาร์บาร่า ต่างเป็นสิ่งที่คาดไม่ถึง
การที่เราได้เรียนต่อระดับมัธยมปลายและมหาวิทยาลัยเกษตรศาสตร์ก็เป็นสิ่งที่ไม่น่าจะเป็นไปได้ ทั้งการขับรถเที่ยวอเมริกาจากชายฝั่งหนึ่งไปอีกชายฝั่งหนึ่งในปี ๒๕๒๑ ก็เป็นสิ่งที่เราไม่เคยคิด ไม่เคยหวังมาก่อน
ระดับ ๔ เกินความคาดหมาย
ดอกไม้ประดิษฐ์ ตะกร้าวิลล่า เทียนทิมเบอร์ มะพร้าวอบกรอบ เหมาะอย่างยิ่งกับความสุขระดับสูงสุดนี้ สินค้าเหล่านี้ไม่เพียงแต่ขายดีแต่ยังขายมากเกินความคาดหมาย และมีผลให้ครอบครัวเราต่างสมัครใจช่วยเหลือซึ่งกันและกัน อย่างไรก็ตามสิ่งเหล่านี้อาจจะไม่เกิดขึ้นหากไม่ได้รับทุนรัฐบาลไทยไปศึกษาและอาศัยทำมาค้าขายในสหรัฐอเมริกา เราไม่ได้บอกใครตอนสมัครสอบทุนฯเพราะไม่คิด
ว่าจะได้เป็นคนเดียวที่รับทุนการศึกษา เป็นสิ่งที่เกินความคาดหมาย การสอบได้ทุนรัฐบาลไทยจึงจัดอยู่ในอันดับสูงสุดของความสุขที่เกิดขึ้นในชีวิต
